About this place Spa Excess

Spa Excess is a gay sauna located in downtown Toronto at 105 Carlton Street, designed with inspiration from traditional European bathhouses. The venue offers a discreet entrance behind wooden doors at street level, making it easy to find once you know where to look. It's a popular spot within Toronto's LGBTQ+ community and welcomes visitors looking for a relaxing spa experience in a gay-friendly environment. The sauna features several distinct spaces designed for relaxation and socializing. Visitors can enjoy a hot tub area with palm trees and entertainment, as well as both wet and dry sauna options. The venue also includes a second-floor maze area. The combination of these different zones gives guests flexibility in how they spend their time, whether they're looking to unwind, socialize, or explore the facilities at their own pace. The atmosphere tends to attract a diverse crowd, with a particular welcoming vibe for mature visitors and members of the Asian community. Like other gay saunas in major cities, this venue is designed as a space for adult relaxation and is part of Toronto's broader LGBTQ+ scene. For more details about hours, facilities, memberships, or current offerings, you can visit their website at https://bearsinexcess.com. Whether you're a Toronto local or visiting the city, Spa Excess offers a traditional bathhouse experience in a central location.

On Oct. 19, 2025, I arrived at Spa Excess around 8:45 a.m as I do every Sunday. Yes it was around 8:45 a.m., and I've never, never had a problem getting a room right away whether there was an event or not on the third floor. I asked for a room on the third floor, but was told there was an event that day and all the rooms were booked on the third floor. This event didn't start until the afternoon and I always got a room whether there was an event or not. The gentlement got flustered when I then asked for a room on the second floor. He quickly said that there was a waiting list on all the floors and would have to wait at least 15 to 20 minutes. I can understand that perhaps the rooms on the third floor were full, but all the rooms in the building were full? I could tell that he was getting nervous and with a nasty tone said that if I didn't want to go on the waiting list to go elsewhere. I've been going to Spa Excess for many years, and only on Sunday Mornings. This is the first time that I've been rude to by anyone at Spa Excess. What's going on? I don't know the guys name that spoke to me, since you've changed your staff around recently, but he's a big guy covered in tatoos. Why was I treated like this? I don't expect special treatment but I do expect respect. As I was leaving someone I know was just coming in. He was also angry that all the rooms were full and agreed that the rooms shouldn't be booked on the third floor or any floor due to special events, especially when this or any event starts much later in the day. He left with me and we went up the street to your competitor and honestly, had a good time. I do realize that some floors can be booked. But all the floors? Common guys, get it right and train this man I spoke with on how to treat people properly. I hope to hear back from someone, anyone regarding this matter at Spa Excess. I've been back since this incident, same time in the morning and on a Sunday, and was told the same thing. All the rooms were full along with all the lockers. I asked if I could be put on a waiting list. The guy with all the tattoos looked at me and said. "Your not welcome here and you can leave". I've talked with several people who have also had a problem with this guy. Since I've not had any kind of reply from the owners I have decided that after many, many years going to Spa Excess I won't waste my energy and money. Well it's now May 16, 2026 and I've not had a reply from Spa Excess which shows that they really don't care. I've posted this again to just show people that Management needs to reply no matter how negative it is.

Music is so freaking bad I wish I was born deaf n they also need to overhaul the late checkout broadcast system (lower the volume of the music channel, and broadcast OVER it, instead of stopping the music)

I've been to 3 different bathhouses, this is my favourite, mostly due to the atmosphere. I often travel there on Friday nights (3 hours) after work to spend the night and travel home Saturday mornings. I find it a place to chill, there is a wide variety of cliental, facilities are clean, and varied enough to let you be "in the mix" or find a quiet space to relax. I almost didn't attend due some other reviews but have visited enough to see they have a core staff that are fun and friendly (that is a two way street, don't bring a poor attitude looking for someone to cheer you up) and when they do get staff that are not a good fit, they cycle them out. If you're a first timer I've never found anyone who didn't give me space when requested.

Yet again, another extremely lacklustre experience at the front desk of spa access. Every single time I come here and that’s being every single time over the last 10 years I have had a negative experience at the front desk. I have had a negative experience at the bar, I have had a negative experience when checking out but tonight took the cake. For whatever reason the front desk clerk decided that he needed to verify my sexuality and informed me that it was a queer establishment. I suppose I didn’t look queer enough for his liking and as a result, he refused both me and my partner access. I can’t even believe that I’m writing this, but I certainly can believe that the Canadian Human Rights council the city of Toronto, the Better Business Bureau and any other governing body that will listen to me will absolutely be hearing about this with all due respect I am amazed that you are able to continue to stay open with these individual running your customer service position. I’ve worked in that arena for over 10 years, and I would have fired every single person you have as the face of your business for a variety of reasons from their attitude to their assumptive behaviour to their lack of human resources understanding. You suck.
