At five in the afternoon the Zona Romántica smells of sunscreen, lime and grilled fish. The blue beach chairs on Playa Los Muertos are full of men turning the colour of a camarón, waiters are carrying buckets of beer across the sand, and the cobbled streets behind the beach are filling up for happy hour. Puerto Vallarta has been a gay beach resort for decades, and its cruising scene is small, compact and mostly indoors: a bear bar with a darkroom, a few men-only cruise bars, a four-storey sauna and an old cinema, all within walking distance of each other. The beach, the river island and the coves to the south have a reputation too, but public sex is an offence and robbery is a real risk after dark. Here is what was running in 2026, and what the law says.
Legal in one line: sex between men is legal in Mexico, same-sex marriage is legal nationwide, and Jalisco bans discrimination on sexual orientation. Darkroom bars, cruise clubs and saunas are legal private venues for adults. Sex in public, including on the beach, is a municipal offence: see the box on the law below.
How cruising works in Puerto Vallarta
Almost everything happens in the Zona Romántica (also called Old Town or Emiliano Zapata), the grid of streets between the Río Cuale and Playa Los Muertos. Lázaro Cárdenas and Basilio Badillo are the main gay streets, and every venue in this guide is a short walk from the next. Days are for the beach and the sauna; the bars fill up after happy hour and the darkrooms after about 22:00. The scene is busiest in the winter high season, during Bear Week and around Pride in May, when visitor numbers peak. New bars open and close quickly here, as the local guide GayPV warns, so check a venue's social media before you go.
Bars with darkrooms and cruise bars

Studs Bear & Leather Bar · Basilio Badillo 283, Zona Romántica
A three-floor bear and leather bar, open since May 2022, with go-go dancers in a cage and a darkroom on the first floor, according to GayPV (updated October 2026). The Gay Passport (June 2026) says the darkroom opens at around 22:00 on most nights and closes at about 00:30, and lists theme nights such as Underwear Wednesdays, Daddies on Thursdays, Jockstrap Fridays and a Saturday Blackout. The bar opens from 15:00 daily, until about 02:00 on weeknights and 04:00 at weekends. It is men-only except during happy hour (15:00–20:00) and on Mondays and Tuesdays until 22:00. Black Gay Boy Abroad (September 2026) notes that the cover charge comes and goes.
Club Jets PV · Calle Insurgentes, Zona Romántica
A men-only cruise club with themed nights and dark corners, closed on Tuesdays, according to GayPV. Black Gay Boy Abroad describes it as a clothing-optional techno club open mainly from Thursday to Sunday into the early morning. Check @clubjetspv for the night's theme and dress code.

Boys PV · Ignacio L. Vallarta and Lázaro Cárdenas
A newer cruising bar with a men-only cruising area inside, which opened in 2026 below Spartacus, according to Black Gay Boy Abroad; GayPV also lists it as a new cruising-style bar in the Zona Romántica. We couldn't confirm its hours, so check its social media.
Eagle PV · Lázaro Cárdenas, Zona Romántica
A new leather and fetish bar on Lázaro Cárdenas, listed by GayPV in 2026. Black Gay Boy Abroad calls it cruising-friendly, with darker spaces. We couldn't confirm an exact address or hours.
For ordinary bars, drag shows and dance clubs, see our Puerto Vallarta bars guide.
The sauna
Spartacus · Lázaro Cárdenas 240, Zona Romántica
A men-only, 18+ sauna that opened in 2012 and spreads over four floors: steam room, dry sauna, jacuzzi, private rooms, video rooms, and a rooftop with a pool, a bar and a palapa for nude sunbathing. Out and About PV counted 400 lockers and 30 private rooms in 2022. The Gay Passport (June 2026) lists it as open daily from 14:00 to 06:00 with entry from about MXN 300, while Black Gay Boy Abroad (September 2026) gives rates of MXN 200–500 depending on the day, with longer hours from Thursday to Sunday. The bar inside is for paying guests only. Bring photo ID. Full details are on our Puerto Vallarta saunas page.
Porn cinema
Elizabeth Taylor Theater (Sala Elizabeth Taylor) · 5 de Febrero 263–265, Zona Romántica
A former cinema showing adult films, with cruising in the auditorium and beer from the lobby snack bar. The Gay Passport lists it as open daily 14:00–22:00, with entry at about MXN 60, busiest after 20:00. It's gritty and the toilets are not very clean. 18+, ID required.
Men-only stays
Piñata PV is a small men-only gay hotel with a clothing-optional pool, jacuzzi and steam room, and a Saturday pool party, according to The Gay Passport; confirm the men-only policy when you book. More options are in our Puerto Vallarta hotels guide and our men-only gay hotels guide.
Before you go: we found no confirmed closures among the venues above for 2026. Spartacus shut for a few months after a fire in November 2021 and reopened in April 2022. Bars in the Zona Romántica change name and owner often, so if a place you read about elsewhere isn't in this guide, check that it still exists.
The beaches and the river island
Playa Los Muertos, south end
The gay stretch of Playa Los Muertos, in front of the Zona Romántica, is above all a social beach: rows of blue and green chairs, beach clubs, vendors and volleyball. By day it's where everyone meets; The Gay Passport says that after dark some of the activity moves along the sand towards the Los Muertos pier. It is a public beach used by families and hotel guests.
Isla Río Cuale
The wooded island in the Río Cuale, between downtown and the Zona Romántica, is a tourist area by day, with a craft market, cafés and riverside paths. It has a long reputation as a night-time cruising ground. Once the market closes it is dark and quiet.
Playa Conchas Chinas
A series of small rocky coves just south of Los Muertos, about five minutes by car. The Gay Passport says men go in the late afternoon and early evening, and that the coves are shared with ordinary beachgoers, so discretion is essential.
Our advice: enjoy the beach by day and leave the night to the indoor venues. If you do walk the beach or the island after dark, go with a friend, carry almost nothing, and stay where there is light.
The law and your safety:
- Public sex: in Jalisco, sex in streets, on beaches or anywhere visible to the public is a municipal administrative offence (falta administrativa) under each town's police regulations, decided by a municipal judge. The Gay Passport notes that in Puerto Vallarta, if someone reports you, police may detain you and you can be fined. As an example of the penalties in Jalisco, Azteca Jalisco reports fines of 15 to 60 UMA (Mexico's official reference unit) in Tlaquepaque under article 28 of its police regulations, and 10 to 40 UMA or 36 hours' arrest in Tonalá under article 45, section VII.
- Filming: sharing sexual images without consent is a crime in Jalisco under the Ley Olimpia reforms. Never photograph anyone in a cruising space.
- Robbery: the beach after dark, the island once the market closes and the rocky coves are where thieves look for people who won't go to the police. Leave your passport, cards and watch at the hotel, take your phone, one card and a little cash, tell a friend where you are, and don't follow strangers somewhere unlit.
- Police: if police approach you, stay calm and polite and show ID. Carry a copy of your passport.
- Emergency: call 911.
- Apps: Grindr, Sniffies and the rest are very active, especially in high season. Meet first in a busy bar, don't go to a stranger's address on the first date, share your live location with a friend, and keep an eye on your drink.
- Getting home: the Zona Romántica is walkable, but for anything further, use a registered taxi or a car booked inside a ride-hailing app, and check the plate before you get in. Never accept a ride offered on the street outside a club.
- Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else.
- Security: in February 2026, after the army killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, cartel members blocked roads, burned vehicles and looted shops in Puerto Vallarta, flights were cancelled and authorities issued shelter-in-place orders. Check your government's travel advice before you go and follow local news while you're there.
- Cash: carry pesos in small notes for cover charges, lockers and tips; card acceptance varies.
- Lockers and phones: use the locker at Spartacus or the clothes check at the bars, leave your passport at the hotel, and keep your phone away in darkrooms.
- Dress codes: theme nights at Studs and Club Jets can mean underwear, jockstraps or less; check their social media before you go.
- Age and ID: the sauna and cinema are 18+ and ask for photo ID.
- Consent: no, gracias is enough, in any room, at any time.
- Health: if a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours and lasts 28 days. The public HIV clinic, CAPASITS Puerto Vallarta (Aldama 1013, Villas del Real, next to the Hospital Regional), offered free PrEP and HIV services on weekdays, 07:00–21:00, when Out and About PV reported in 2024 (tel. +52 322 299 4715); ask there about PEP and bring your passport. Out of hours, go to a hospital emergency department (urgencias) and say "PEP". In 2024 the Vallarta Gay Community Center was offering PrEP, PEP, DoxyPEP and STI testing to all, with registration on WhatsApp (+52 322 128 6793); check that it still runs the service.
- ¿Cuánto cuesta la entrada? – how much is entry?
- Casillero – locker. Toalla – towel. Efectivo – cash.
- Cuarto oscuro – darkroom.
- Ligar – to pick someone up; ligue – a pick-up.
- Condón – condom.
- Urgencias – emergency department.
- ¡Qué padre! – how cool!
- No, gracias – no, thanks. Always enough.
Safety: apps, taxis and the night
A Puerto Vallarta evening, the local way
Watch the sunset from the Los Muertos pier, then start with a raicilla, the smoky agave spirit of Jalisco's coast and mountains, or a michelada on a beach-club terrace. Eat pescado zarandeado, a whole fish butterflied, marinated in chilli and grilled over wood, or a few tacos de marlin from a street stand. After midnight, the taco carts on the streets of the Zona Romántica feed the bar crowd on its way home.

Frequently asked questions
Where is gay cruising in Puerto Vallarta?
Almost all of it is in the Zona Romántica, within a few blocks of Lázaro Cárdenas and Basilio Badillo. Studs has a darkroom on its first floor, Club Jets and Boys PV are men-only cruise bars, and Spartacus is the men-only sauna. Playa Los Muertos, Isla Río Cuale and Conchas Chinas have an outdoor reputation, but public sex is an offence.
Is there a gay sauna in Puerto Vallarta?
Yes. Spartacus, at Lázaro Cárdenas 240 in the Zona Romántica, is a men-only sauna over four floors with steam, a jacuzzi, private rooms and a rooftop pool and bar. 2026 guides put entry at roughly MXN 200–500 depending on the day, and it stays open late, into the early morning at weekends.
Is cruising on Playa Los Muertos or Isla Río Cuale legal?
Being gay on the beach is legal; sex in public is not. In Jalisco it is a municipal offence punished with a fine or a short arrest, usually after someone complains. After dark, robbery is the bigger risk, so keep valuables at the hotel and use the indoor venues instead.
Where can I get PEP in Puerto Vallarta?
PEP must start within 72 hours of a risk. The public HIV clinic, CAPASITS Puerto Vallarta, is at Aldama 1013 in Villas del Real, next to the Hospital Regional, and offers free HIV prevention on weekdays. Outside clinic hours, go to a hospital emergency department and ask for PEP.
When was Vallarta Pride 2026?
Vallarta Pride 2026 ran from 17 to 24 May. The March against Homophobia and Transphobia went through downtown and along the Malecón on Sunday 17 May, and the Pride Parade set off on Thursday 21 May at 16:00. Expect the 2027 edition in May again.
