About this place The Fens (Back Bay Fens)

The Back Bay Fens — the marshy park and community Victory Gardens tucked behind the Museum of Fine Arts — is the longest-standing gay cruising ground in Boston, a role it has quietly held since at least the 1960s, when the surrounding Fenway neighborhood grew into a center of queer life. The tall reeds and winding garden paths along the park's eastern edge have drawn men after dark for generations. This is a discreet, after-hours scene rather than an organized venue: activity picks up late in the evening and mostly in the warmer months. A word of caution belongs here. The Fens has a hard history of both anti-gay violence and periodic police attention, and much of the park is unlit and isolated once you step off the main paths. Stay within earshot of the road, let someone know where you are, and trust your instincts. Same-sex activity is fully legal in Massachusetts, but public-decency laws still apply — anything beyond meeting people belongs behind a closed door.
