Charlesgate Suites

I stayed with my family for three nights in Charlesgate and everything was great. I returned to Boston after 32 years and found it much improved. Charlesgate is a good place to explore the city.

Very clean, safe, and comfortable place, easily accessible to various points of interest in the city. I really enjoyed my stay here. The host was very friendly and attentive to any questions or problems.

I looked for weeks and found the perfect place in Boston and booked Charlesgate Suites and got a confirmation letter. I paid $1300. (Yikes!) for 3 days. the next day they sent me a message that contained the following: We are unable to provide refunds for shortened stays or any inconveniences caused by temporary cable, internet, Wi-Fi, heating, cooling, or power outages.By confirming your booking you agree to the above rules and regulations. But wait, but the listing says you have cable, internet, Wi-Fi, heating and cooling. I sent them a message telling them this is not acceptable and I would not agree to it. It’s not part of hotels.com terms. They replied saying they were just setting expectations and then cancelled my reservation with no reason given. I have stayed 38 times with hotels.com and have gold status and have never seen messaging like this ..I spoke with the hotels.com rep and he tried to call them and they did not pick up their phone. There were very few negative reviews. but 5 of them spoke of problems. Things broken and not fixed, one unit had no a/c in mid summer. Another couple was put in a basement room when they paid for a Premium room with a view (also not resolved). Unfortunately, I had to find another room and pay $300 more. It’s probably better than avoiding the risk. The letter gave me the impression that things frequently or are already broken. They want your $ and have a long list of Dos and Don'ts and want to dump their problems on you. This is not in alignment with any other hotels policies that I have stayed at.

I spent an extra$400 to get the design studio suite that is 505sq ft with a stove and full size fridge. I got a comfort suite that was 300sq ft [200 feet less] NO STOVE NO full size FRIDGE. The property said it was expedia's fault but expedia had all the info sent to them for the design studio. The property wouldn't respond in a timely matter about the room or at least a partial refund for the wrong room they put us in. It's a total nightmare! The beds are comfortable but not what I paid for. It's false advertisement.

We loved our stay here. Clean, airy and light apartment on the fourth floor (be aware there are a lot of steps!), with a great view of the river and far enough above the traffic to be quiet. Great location - 5 min walk to the T, easy to get to all the fun sights and restaurants. Hosts very receptive, and loved the little touches - an umbrella to grab before we went out in the rain, a laundry basket next to the washer/dryer. Would definitely recommend!

To our surprise, a $125 cleaning fee was tacked on to our charge for a one-night stay in a single room. We left the room in immaculate condition, and were only in the room long enough to sleep. Booking.com indicated that the only other charge beyond the room fee would be the tax, no mention of a cleaning fee upfront. When we contacted the owner to resolve what we thought was an error, he said this $125 is a standard fee he always charges and he refused to refund or discount the fee. The room was adequate, nothing special. For the cost of this booking, you can get a much nicer hotel room downtown without hidden fees.

Make sure you book the right room. Not every room has full kitchen and dining table. I booked a design studio room and thought there is a kitchen that I could cook some simple meals but there is NOT. I found it out after check in. And just learned that they have different units and not every unit has a kitchen shown in their pictures. Also my unit is a half basement. Half is underground. There are garbage cans right outside of one window and there are carbon boxes block the other window. This apartment is right behind highway, the passing cars’ headlights can shoot inside the room. The noise and the headlight can be very disturbing during night. We have to wear eye masks to block the light. We have four people. We use the sofa bed as the extra bed. Then there are no extra chairs. I asked for giving us extra chairs from the host but unfortunately no chair is available since they say their rooms are fully booked. Also there is no table inside of the design studio. My son has to go upstairs to use a small table in the common area to do his project from his camp. But the room is pretty clean. The king bed mattress is very comfortable. The sofa bed mattress is fair and much better than many other hotel’s sofa bed. The location is 10 mins away from back bay. A lot of shopping and good food in that area. Also walkable to MIT(about 30 mins). And very easy access to Charles river for a stroll or run. The host is very fast on response.

Overall a very nice place to stay. The standout points for us were: - Very comfortable bedding. - Extremely nice and well equipped kitchen- the cooktop was even induction! - Very good lighting. Dimmable from "way too bright" to "quite dim". Pick what you want. - It was very nice to have a fireplace. But it turned out this was more essential than a luxury (see below). - The help desk was very responsive to emails and helped sort things out. We even got an early check in so we wouldn't have to mess around until the 4PM official check in time. - Keypad doors and no "front desk" set up work very well. Not so nice: - We got there when the temps were changing and it was 50 degrees outside AND inside. But the climate control was locked on "cool" and we couldn't change it. The only solution was to turn on the gas fireplace. This worked, but it took forever before the room was comfortable. - The bay window is nice, but it only has horizontal blinds and cars are driving around back there shining their headlights at the window. Lots of light gets through, which can make it difficult to sleep. Curtains of some kind to better block the light would help. Things to know: - If you want ice you'll need to turn the icemaker on in the freezer. If the fridge/freezers are all the save it's a switch on the side of the icemaker in the upper freezer drawer. - You will need to take out the trash and recycling yourself when you leave. - There's a laundry room in the basement. We only noticed this when taking out the trash as we were leaving.

Smooth and easy self checkin process, thanks to the detailed instructions, and excellent responsiveness from the owner. We will definitely come back!

A wonderful place to stay! Just stayed here for a couple nights while on a trip to visit family. The building & rooms are so full of charm while having everything you'd need. It's like having a studio apartment in a great location with lots of functionality. Staff was always very communicative and helpful when reached out to, and the place was also kept super clean. Would totally book here again!

Very comfortable stay. Very clean and quiet. Shower was amazing. Central air was amazing. Quick responses with communication. A bit expensive but very nice stay.
