About this place South Street Diner

South Street Diner, built in 1947 by the Worcester Dining Company, started out feeding factory workers. Now it’s a late-night fixture in Boston, pulling in everyone from students to tourists for old-school diner food.

You’ll find it at City Hall Plaza. It’s a reliable spot for after-hours grub, drawing a mix of people who want something easy and familiar. The place is gay-friendly, too, part of a city where LGBTQ+ travelers can find welcoming spots all over.

Its staying power suggests it’s a comfortable place for anyone, whether you’re coming in at 2 AM or just want a simple meal. It’s unpretentious, serving up a genuine slice of Boston.

Check southstreetdiner.com for hours and the menu. Its downtown location means it’s easy to get to, and it’s a good bet you’ll meet an interesting cross-section of Bostonians and visitors while you’re there.

It’s been my second time going to South Street Diner today and I loved it. The waiters and the staff were so nice, friendly, and hospitable towards me. To demonstrate, Shannon remembered me and hugged me twice. Of course, I was happy to see her again. I was never treated with such remarkable hospitality and kindness in a restaurant post first-time. Because of this, South Street Diner is definitely a go-to spot for me when I visit Boston overnight.
