The honest summary: Gay men in Charlotte meet indoors and on the apps. The city has a leather bar with a busy patio, two men's saunas and a handful of gay bars. We couldn't confirm any outdoor cruising spot from a source outside online cruising directories, so this guide doesn't recommend one.

Where men actually meet

    • The Woodshed (3935 Queen City Dr) has been the leather bar since 2001. It has pool tables, a patio with two outdoor bars and the Dirty South Leather gear shop. It's 21+, and the crowd is mostly men. Weekend nights are busiest, and you'll need a car or rideshare.
    • Eros Men's Spa (5101-A Nations Ford Rd) is the men-only bathhouse. It has steam, a dry sauna, a cold room and salt and clay rooms. Its website lists daily hours of 11:00 to 19:00 and a $40 day pass, and recent reviews describe an older crowd and a building that needs work.
    • Sauna For Men (10700 Kettering Dr, Suite L) is a small upstairs sauna in south Charlotte with steam, a dry sauna and TV and music rooms. Reviewers say entry is about $40 and it can be very quiet, so call before you go.
    • The apps. Grindr, Scruff and Sniffies are how most locals meet. They're legal and private.

    Outdoor spots

McAlpine Creek Park in east Charlotte is named on online cruising lists. We found no independent, current source confirming it: no local press, no community group and no venue. It's a county greenway park used every day by runners, dog walkers, school cross-country meets and youth soccer, and rangers patrol it. Older lists name other parks, rest areas and Uptown blocks; these have been redeveloped or are under patrol. QNotes' archives name Freedom Park as an early cruising spot; that's history, not a tip.

We don't publish directions, meeting points or times for any public place. Treat any outdoor listing as a risk, not a recommendation.

    The law, plainly

    • Indecent exposure in public is a Class 2 misdemeanor in North Carolina (G.S. 14-190.9). With a child under 16 present it can be a Class H felony.
    • County parks close at dusk. Being in a closed park can be charged as trespass.
    • Arrest records are public in North Carolina.
    • Same-sex sex in private between adults is legal. The 2003 Lawrence v. Texas ruling means the old "crime against nature" law can't be used against consenting adults in private.

    Safety tips

    • Meet app contacts in a bar or another public place first, and tell a friend where you're going.
    • The saunas and the Woodshed are in commercial and industrial areas. Park in a lit spot and leave nothing on show in the car.
    • Walk away from anyone who asks for money, wants you at an unfamiliar address, or pushes drugs.
    • Free HIV and STI testing: RAIN in Uptown, or Mecklenburg County Public Health at 2845 Beatties Ford Road (which runs the PrEP clinic) and 249 Billingsley Road, on 704-336-6500. If you need PEP, go to a hospital emergency department within 72 hours.

Gay bars for a night out

The Scorpio (225 Fairwood Ave, South End, since 1968) is the big drag-and-dance club. Bar Argon and Sidelines share 4544 South Blvd. Chasers (3217 The Plaza) has go-go dancers, drag and a bear night. White Rabbit on Central Avenue sells underwear, gear and the rest. The full Charlotte guide covers the rest of the scene.

FAQ

Is there outdoor cruising in Charlotte?

Not that we could confirm. McAlpine Creek Park shows up on cruising directories, but no independent source backs it up, and it's a busy, patrolled family park. Public sex is a crime in North Carolina.

What's the cruisiest bar in Charlotte?

The Woodshed, the leather bar on Queen City Drive, especially on its patio on weekend nights.

Does Charlotte have a gay bathhouse?

Yes. Eros Men's Spa on Nations Ford Road is men-only, about $40 a visit, and open daily from 11:00 to 19:00 according to its website. Sauna For Men on Kettering Drive is smaller. Neither is open late.

When is the best time to visit?

Charlotte Pride, on the third weekend of August, is when every bar is full. Otherwise Friday and Saturday nights are when the scene is busiest.
