The Hampton Inn and Suites Chicago Downtown is a solid, well-priced choice for LGBTQ+ visitors who want to be in the middle of everything.
You’ll find it at 21 West Illinois Street, a location that puts you walking distance from bars, restaurants, and shopping. It’s a Hampton Inn, so it’s not going to win any design awards, but it is clean, dependable, and has bigger rooms than some of the newer, trendier spots. Rates are usually good here, making it a decent option if you don't want to blow your budget on a hotel room.
The best thing about this place is its location. Public transport is everywhere, and you can get to pretty much any neighborhood quickly. If you’re here for Chicago’s gay scene, you’ll find yourself well-connected to Boystown in Lakeview or Andersonville further north, though you'll need to take the train for those. But for downtown exploration, it’s hard to beat.
It’s a practical hotel, not a flashy one. You’ll find a mix of families, business travelers, and tourists here—it’s an all-purpose kind of place. If you need a comfortable bed in a central spot and don't care about boutique frills, this is a perfectly good bet.

What an excellent stay! This is our first time staying in the city overnight, and this hotel did not disappoint. From the views, to the cleanliness, to the location, it all exceeded our expectations. First of all, the views. We stayed in a double queen suite that overlooked Illinois Avenue and Clark Street. It was an excellent spot for viewing the city. The cleanliness was unmatched. For being a city hotel, it was impeccable. The front desk lobby was beautiful and well kept, the hallways were clean and the pool was clean as well. Our room was spotless. The location is in a safe area. River North has many hotels, universities, and hospitals close by so we did not feel unsafe at any point. One thing to note: this hotel does not offer valet parking, so you will have to find overnight parking for yourself in a parking garage. We parked our car in the Grand Plaza Apartment parking lot and it was safe. For 24 hours of parking, it costs $68.00. Thank you also to the wonderful staff as well: Silvia in Breakfast Service, Raul at the front desk. These folks shined during our stay! We cannot wait to stay in Hampton Inn & Suites Chicago-Downtown again soon!
I made a three-night reservation with this property. Upon arrival, I was informed that the parking area was located about a five-minute walk away. Unfortunately, I arrived during a storm and am currently in my final month of pregnancy. Given the weather conditions and my pregnancy, I realized this accommodation was not suitable for my situation and decided to cancel the reservation in order to find a safer and more comfortable place to stay. Initially, the staff informed me that they would be able to provide a full refund if Booking.com contacted them and authorized it, acknowledging my circumstances. However, after I arranged for Booking.com to call them, they changed their position and stated that their policies did not allow a full refund, offering only a partial refund instead. This has been a very disappointing experience, particularly considering my advanced pregnancy and the fact that I relied on the information they provided when making my decision. I believe a full refund would be fair under these circumstances.
The room is clean and spacious. There's a fire station next door, so it gets very noisy every time they respond to an emergency. I wish they'd improve the soundproofing. The staff are friendly. The breakfast is delicious.
Awesome
I booked a room here for August — or so I thought, until I realized the date was set for the same day I was looking. As a result, I was charged for the night. I immediately saw my error and canceled the reservation within 5 minutes. My money, though, was gone. Still, it showed canceled on my end. I am a Hilton rewards member, and I thought that by explaining my error (I did plan to book there for August), they would at least give me a partial refund. So I wrote Hilton customer service, and they forwarded the request to the hotel. After a few days, the hotel wrote back, and Akur wrote to say: “After reviewing your reservation details, it indicates that this reservation was not cancelled in our system. Therefore, a one-night room and tax no show fee was applied and unfortunately, we are unable to refund this amount. If you can provide any supporting documents, such as a cancellation email supporting that this reservation was cancelled, then we can certainly revisit this case.” So naturally I responded with a screenshot of the reservation that showed cancelled on my end. I did not receive an email. So Akur says: “This reservation was never cancelled in our system which is the reason the "no show" fee was applied. A cancellation fee can be waived under probable causes after the deadline. If you can provide an email confirming that this reservation was cancelled, even if it was past the deadline, then we can reconsider the refund.” But I did cancel the reservation, and that is what is reflected in my Hilton account. The problem here is Hilton’s software workflow. Events such as a cancellation should create a chain of events, such as, oh, showing that I cancelled the reservation on their side. It did not. Somehow, though, this is MY problem, and not theirs. I reluctantly have to conclude that being a Hilton Honors member is worthless and means nothing. If their software is broken, well, too bad for me. This was an expensive mistake, but no human being will make it right for me. At this point, I would suggest literally any other Hotel chain, and certainly not this location.
