Denver’s gay bars split between Capitol Hill and South Broadway. The two neighborhoods are next to each other: Broadway runs south from the Colorado State Capitol, and Cap Hill is just east. Most of Denver’s gay nightlife happens in these two areas.
The bars aren't packed together like on a single European gay street, but they're close enough that people usually walk between them without thinking twice.
Crowds here are mostly local. This isn't a scene for weekend tourists; the regulars are Denver residents, many of whom have lived in Cap Hill for a long time. That makes these bars feel different from gay scenes heavy with visitors. Less performance, more neighborhood. If you want the real thing, not the postcard version, Denver delivers.
South Broadway
South Broadway, or "SoBo" to locals, has the most gay venues. It stretches south from around 6th Avenue to Iowa Avenue. You'll find sports bars, dive bars, dance bars, and at least one leather bar within a few blocks. On a Friday or Saturday night, the sidewalks between places fill up. People tend to move from bar to bar throughout the evening instead of staying put.
The South Broadway scene also blends into the street’s wider arts and DIY culture—record shops, vintage stores, and independent restaurants sit right alongside the bars. It’s one of the more interesting gay bar strips in the US because it isn't exclusively gay.
Capitol Hill
Cap Hill proper, east of Broadway around Colfax and 13th Avenue, feels more like a neighborhood. Bars here are usually smaller and cater to a more regular crowd. Some of Denver’s older queer institutions are on these blocks. It’s quieter than Broadway most nights, but it’s worth checking out if you want something more local and less like a bar strip.
The Bars
- Tracks Denver — Denver's biggest gay dance club, in RiNo. Multiple floors, drag shows, and touring DJs; the anchor of the city's nightlife since 1980.
- Charlie's Denver — Long-running country-western gay bar on East Colfax, open since 1981 — line dancing in one room, pop and drag in the next.
- X Bar — Capitol Hill dance and karaoke bar with a big patio and an upstairs dance platform; a reliable Colfax go-to.
- Tight End Bar — Gay sports bar on East Colfax with indoor and outdoor seating, plenty of TVs, and a friendly all-welcome crowd.
- Buddies Denver — Easygoing neighborhood gay pub on East Colfax, good for a low-key drink near the other Cap Hill bars.
- #VYBE — Inclusive Golden Triangle bar with drag, karaoke, and sports nights drawing a mixed queer crowd.
- Denver Eagle — Denver's leather and Levi bar, cruisy and welcoming, with a heated back patio.
- Trade — Men's fetish and cruise bar in the Santa Fe arts district, open late with leather-bar decor.
- Lil Devils Lounge — Small, friendly leather-leaning dive on South Broadway with cheap strong drinks and a year-round patio.
- R & R Denver — Classic East Colfax neighborhood gay bar, an unpretentious cocktail-and-conversation spot.
- glow lounge — Intimate upstairs Colfax lounge with LED lighting and drag and burlesque nights.
- El Potrero Night Club — Latin LGBTQ+ nightclub in Glendale with reggaeton, banda, and drag — the metro's main Latinx gay party.
- Hamburger Mary's Denver — Campy LGBTQ+ burger bar near City Park with drag brunches, dinner shows, and bingo.
Practical Notes
Colorado’s 2am last call applies everywhere. Unlike some states, there’s no variance for specific venues—2am is 2am. Plan accordingly: if you want a full night out, get to the bars before midnight.
Denver bars are generally casual. Dress codes at most venues are minimal. The leather bar is the exception—check its specific dress code if you’re visiting on a leather night.
Drinks are cheaper than on the coasts. Expect $9-13 for a cocktail, $5-7 for a beer. Happy hour deals run until 7 or 8pm at several places.
Altitude makes alcohol hit faster. If you just got to Denver from sea level, factor that in and drink more water than usual.
