About this place Galveston Gay Beach

Galveston's informal gay beach is the pocket of sand along Seawall Boulevard roughly between 27th and 31st Streets, the stretch closest to the island's downtown gay bars. There is no official designation — Galveston's beaches are open to everyone — but this is where LGBTQ+ locals and visitors have long gathered to lay out towels, swim and socialize, and it is promoted informally within the community as the island's gayest beach. Access is via the public beach entrances off the Seawall; the wider East Beach on the island's eastern tip is the site of the annual Pride beach party. Bring your own shade and water, mind the Gulf currents, and remember these are family public beaches — the vibe is relaxed and low-key rather than a scene.

Pay to park but parking spaces right there to walk to the beach. Beach dirty with rough waves. Lifeguard worthless as they are just on their phones.

We stayed in Galveston 8/15 through 8/20. We lodged at a Ryson property in the Spanish Grant subdivision between Bemuda Beach and Coco Beach. The beach and ocean were filled with TAR BALLS! The locals told us the tar was caused by all the oil rigs and shrimp boats out in the ocean. Every day we were at the beach and our clothes, feet, boogie boards were stained with gooey tar. It was horrific! I was fearful for my grandkids as I couldn’t see this was not unhealthy! Worst beach - do not visit. Even local restaurants and shops had signs “please check your shoes for tar and remove if necessary” as it stained everything! We had to throw away our sandals, some clothes, and 4 boogie boards. The tar was even on the carpet in our rental from previous guests. Horrible!!!!!
