Disappointing Stay – Functional Amenities Should Be the Bare Minimum We chose this hotel primarily for its location, gym, and hot tub, but unfortunately, the lack of functional amenities made for an incredibly frustrating stay. The experience begins the moment you walk in. The lobby and the rooms carry a stale, musty odor that instantly transports you to your grandmother's house in the eighties and not in a charming, nostalgic way. It's the kind of scent that settles into your clothes and makes you wonder when the carpets and upholstery were last deep cleaned. A complete refresh is long overdue, and a coat of paint alone won't fix it. With the elevators down for the duration of our visit, we had no choice but to take the stairs sometimes. Be prepared: the stairwell hits you with an overwhelming smell of old fish that makes an already exhausting trek even more unpleasant. And if you think you'll cool off with some ice once you finally reach your floor, think again the ice machine has been out of ice all day. Basic necessities simply aren't being maintained. This is what happens when lack of management meets lack of care for overall guests stay. What was most unacceptable, however, was the hot tub situation. We only discovered it was ice cold a full day into our stay. There was no signage, no barrier closing it off, and zero communication from the front desk acknowledging the issue, let alone offering an apology for the inconvenience. Simply ignoring that a main advertised amenity is out of order shows a real lack of guest consideration. If it was broken they certainly wouldn’t advertise this on their website. Weeks without this amenity is terrible. The only silver lining was the staff. Everyone we encountered was friendly, and a special mention goes to Tammy at Map & Information she was kind, patient very thorough and knowledgeable about wide range of topics on Hawaiii, she was truly amazing. That said, friendly staff can't make up for broken elevators, a fish-scented stairwell, no ice, a freezing hot tub, and a building that smells decades past its prime. With so many other hotels available right on the water, I'd strongly recommend passing on this one and booking elsewhere.
Aging hotel, loud rooms, elevators take forever, broken ice machines. Didn't have a problem with garage, but I usually came back before 8pm.
I booked through Expedia and it was a nightmare! They got my reservation wrong! I was in tears waiting to try and check in for an hour. Gladys, at Holiday Inn check in, was amazing. She walked me through everything and was able to get us the correct room. I hope there are more people in the world like this cuz it truly makes a difference! Thank you, Shawna Robertson
I’d like to acknowledge and thank Gladys, manager, for her help in resolving a complicated situation regarding rooms I had booked for me and my family for our stay from June 13 to June 21. Gladys’s cooperative spirit and understanding made our vacation delightful and memorable. We’ll be back! Sincerely, Naomi Yoshida
Bugs all over the room, called room service, guy was very rude. Tried to downgrade our room to a one bedroom. Overall not the best experience
On our way back home from Japan, we stayed overnight at Holiday Inn Express in Honolulu. An absolutely delightful staff member named Gladys checked us in and took care of us. She was friendly, warm and inviting, and knowledgeable. She made us feel welcome and appreciated. All hospitality staff should aspire to be like Gladys!!! We were upgraded to a corner room on the 32nd floor and the views were stunning! One con about this hotel...the elevators are very slow and the wait can be long for one to arrive.
