About this place Varsity

Varsity Bar is a queer sports bar that opened in 2025 on Hyde Park Boulevard, in the space that was previously home to Eagle Houston. It pairs big screens and game-day energy with a welcoming LGBTQ+ crowd, patio hangs and drink specials. A relaxed, jersey-friendly alternative to Montrose's dance clubs.

Reliably good time. Great for parties and kids.

Not as special as when it was Eagle. The dancers just stand there talking to one another. I don't think they have the food truck and longer. The old bartenders are back which is good. It's just sad what happened to Eagle.

Overheard during the Spain vs. Argentina watch party, as I (possibly the only trans person there) was using the clearly unisex bathrooms: "Did a guy just walk into the women's bathroom?" Nice to know that Montrose gay bars haven't changed that much. At least I wasn't price gouged on the drinks? Either way, never again.

Just trying to go back inside and check up on our friends. However, the bouncers at the front completely lied to our faces and ended up luring our friends back into the establishment and told us that we weren’t welcome. I would never recommend this bar to anyone that I know, save your money and go elsewhere.

Sad the the old Eagle rebranded as Varsity has a perplexing group of customers. Neither sports related men or leather Levien from the past. Boys in heels and purses instead
