Houston Pride
About This Event
Houston Pride is the largest Pride in Texas and claims to be the largest in the South. The first Houston gay pride parade marched in 1979, on the tenth anniversary of Stonewall, and the event is now run by Pride Houston 365, a volunteer nonprofit. In a state where the legislature keeps passing anti-LGBTQ+ bills, the turnout in America's fourth-largest city carries a political weight of its own.
The format is unusual: a festival during the day and a parade after dark. Both now happen downtown around City Hall rather than in Montrose, the historic gayborhood, which still hosts the after-parties. The parade starts in the evening and loops through downtown streets with floats from city agencies, sports teams, the Houston Pride Band and dozens of community groups. Watching from the street is free; grandstand and VIP seats near the main stage are sold separately.
Houston normally holds Pride on a Saturday in late June. Take the heat seriously: Houston in June is hot and very humid, and summer thunderstorms are a real risk to an outdoor evening event, as 2026 showed. Downtown hotels are convenient and walkable to the route; Montrose is where you want to be once the parade ends.
The 2026 edition was knocked off its usual date twice. Because Houston was a FIFA World Cup host city, the festival and parade were moved forward to Saturday 6 June. The festival went ahead, but storms over the city all day forced organisers to postpone the parade, which finally ran on the evening of Saturday 15 August 2026 under the theme "Limitless", from Smith and Lamar to Milam and Pease, with more than 80 groups taking part. No attendance figure was released for 2026; organisers estimated about 200,000 at the 2025 parade. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
