Houston doesn't have a dense cluster of gay-owned hotels in Montrose like some other cities do. Montrose itself has limited places to stay. Most visitors pick a hotel elsewhere and rideshare in for nights out.
Good news: Houston hotels are generally cheaper than those in US coastal cities. Rides from most hotel zones to Montrose are short enough that this works just fine.
Where to base yourself
Montrose and Midtown — Staying right in or next to Montrose puts you closest to the bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. There aren't many places to stay here; what you find tends to be boutique hotels, guesthouses, or apartment rentals, not big chains. If walking to bars is important, look in Montrose proper and Midtown, which is to the east.
The Galleria / Uptown — The Galleria, west of Montrose along Westheimer, has the most hotels in Houston. You'll find everything from budget chains to luxury. It's a 10- to 15-minute rideshare from Montrose, and a quick drive gets you onto Westheimer, heading into the neighborhood. If you want reliable hotel options and don't mind a short rideshare to the bars, this is a good spot.
Downtown and Midtown — Downtown works for daytime sightseeing, conventions, and the theater. Midtown sits between downtown and Montrose and has its own scene of restaurants and bars. Hotels here are a reasonable middle ground: close to Montrose, but also to the rest of the city. A rideshare from Midtown to the Westheimer bar strip usually takes under 10 minutes.
Museum District / Hermann Park — The Museum District is just south of Montrose. It's quieter, more residential, and has the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Hermann Park. Staying here puts you near the cultural stuff and a short distance from Montrose.
Booking timing
Houston Pride in June is the busiest time for LGBTQ+ visitors, and hotel demand in relevant areas jumps that week. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in March is one of the city's biggest events, driving up hotel demand across the market for several weeks.
The Super Bowl at NRG Stadium, big conferences at the George R. Brown Convention Center, and large medical conferences at the Texas Medical Center all create sporadic high-demand periods. These can affect Midtown and downtown hotel prices.
Outside of these events, Houston's hotel market is usually easy to navigate. You can often find last-minute rooms in the Galleria area. Rates drop quite a bit Sunday through Thursday compared to weekends.
The hotels
- SpringHill Suites Houston Northwest — The SpringHill Suites Houston Northwest is in the Willowbrook area, near Hewlett Packard Campuses and attractions like Sam Houston Race Park. Suites have pillowtop bedding, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and microwaves, making them good for longer stays. They offer a free, hot breakfast buffet.
Practical notes
