About this place JR.'s Bar & Grill

JR.'s Bar & Grill on Pacific Street is one of Houston's most beloved gay bar institutions — a Montrose neighbourhood fixture that has been serving the community for decades and occupies a central place in Houston's gay social geography. Not to be confused with the DC institution of the same name, Houston's JR.'s is its own independent operation with deep roots in Montrose and a physical layout that makes it one of the more welcoming gay bars on the Gulf Coast: multiple levels, an outdoor patio that is one of the best outdoor drinking spaces in Houston's gay scene, and a diverse crowd that reflects the breadth of Houston's LGBTQ+ community. JR.'s sits on Pacific Street adjacent to South Beach Houston — the two venues between them anchor the core of Houston's current gay nightlife geography in a way that has made Pacific Street the de facto centre of Montrose bar culture. The bar is accessible and unpretentious in the tradition of a good neighbourhood gay bar: affordable drinks, regulars who welcome newcomers, and a physical space that encourages the kind of long, relaxed evening that is characteristic of Houston's gay social culture. For first-time visitors to Houston's gay scene, JR.'s is the natural starting point.

I decided to visit during Pride weekend and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. While ordering drinks at the outdoor bar for myself and a group of friends, I encountered a bartender whose behavior was unprofessional and unnecessarily rude. When I approached the bar, he acknowledged me but chose to take the order of someone who walked up afterward. When it was finally my turn, I asked for tequila shots. He asked what kind, and when I replied that any tequila was fine, he responded in a condescending manner and accompanied his comment with an unfriendly gesture. The interaction only became more uncomfortable from there. After noticing that I was clearly unhappy with the service, he remarked that “a smile can go a long way,” despite the fact that I had approached the bar in a positive mood and left feeling quite the opposite. Following the interaction, I chose not to leave a tip based on the service I received. He then informed me that he would no longer serve me. When I politely asked for his name, he declined to provide it and instead responded with another sarcastic comment. Because of that, I attached a photo to help management identify the employee involved. I understand that busy events can be stressful, especially during Pride weekend, but customers should still be treated with basic courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, this interaction left both me and my friends with a negative impression, and it is the reason we do not plan to return.

If you’re thinking this is the accepting place, it’s not. If you’re a girl, they will refuse service. Do not recommend to anyone but gay guys. Do not come here if you’re looking for a place that accepts all, there are better spots.

A staple in Montrose. Sunday Funday is a must here. If you love to sing they offer karaoke nights as well. Aside from the funky smell you sometimes get walking through the main entrance and outdated bathrooms, it's always a fun time here!
