About this place Gay & Lesbian Independent Democrats

The Gay & Lesbian Independent Democrats (GLID) isn't a bar or a museum. It's an organization that helped shape New York's LGBTQ+ political history.

Started in 1972, GLID was the city's first gay and lesbian democratic club. That makes it a landmark in the fight for queer representation and political power. You'll find it in the West Village, a neighborhood that’s always been central to LGBTQ+ activism and community in New York. GLID still operates as a hub for politically engaged members of that community.

This isn't a social spot. GLID's focus is political advocacy, community organizing, and pushing for democratic participation. If you want to see how LGBTQ+ New Yorkers have built political influence over the last five decades, or if you're looking to connect with people who care about policy and representation, this is where you go.

To find out about current meetings, events, or how to get involved, check their website at glidny.org. Given its West Village address, it’s an easy stop if you're exploring other queer history sites or community spaces in the area.

I first had meetings here in what had been the actual showers, hoping that the pipes didn't burst, or leak. I was here for the Rainbow Book Fair, which took center attention.
