The Anthropologists, a New York-based artist collective, makes original theater rooted in research and ensemble collaboration. It’s a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ artists and audiences, specializing in investigative, socially relevant performances that use physical theater and contemporary dance.
The company develops work from an anthropological point of view, which means they dig into cultural themes and artistic discoveries as a group. Their shows aren't afraid to take on big subjects, often with inventive staging.
If you're looking for contemporary performance that pushes past traditional theater—think movement, group dynamics, and cultural investigation—this is a good place to start. It’s part of a bigger LGBTQ+ arts community in the city, but their perspective feels unique.
To see what's on, check their website, theanthropologists.org. You’ll find production dates, workshop schedules, and ways to get involved.

Met Dr Octavius here,very helpful
One of the best Cinemas in NYC! Great Peogrammes and a great way of showing what the Community and people working at Anthology produce! A great piece of history of the connection between Vienna and NYC! Thank you for doing this super important work!!!
I have been a fan of the Anthology Film Archives for years, so naturally when I went back to school to get my master's in library sciences and archival work I wanted to incorporate this place somehow. I called and spoke with the director, John, to see if I could ask him a few questions about their organizational systems for my cataloging class and was met with "I have actually critically important responsibilities and don't have time to answer questions from a random student." I offered to just email him two or three simple questions and that was not acceptable either, also offered to talk to anyone else that works there - also a no. There was also no rush or time constraint on my request. As a masters students, we rely on people who are already working in the field for guidance and mentorship, or the very least kindness. Supremely disappointed, will not ever be returning.
Cool place
Such a great space. Great curation, too.
