About this place Bureau of General Services — Queer Division

The Bureau of General Services — Queer Division at 83A Hester Street on the Lower East Side is the successor institution to the legendary Oscar Wilde Bookshop (which operated in Greenwich Village from 1967 until it was forced to close in 2009, making it the first gay bookshop in the United States). The Bureau opened in 2012 and has established itself as New York's primary queer literary and cultural space: a bookshop that stocks queer fiction, theory, memoir, art books, zines, and political writing with a depth and specificity that mainstream booksellers cannot match. The space functions simultaneously as a gallery — rotating exhibitions of queer visual art — and as a community venue: readings, talks, and signings by LGBTQ+ authors and artists are programmed regularly. The Lower East Side location, while not in the traditional Greenwich Village or Hell's Kitchen gay districts, reflects the evolution of New York's queer cultural geography toward Brooklyn and the outer Manhattan neighbourhoods. The Bureau is operated as a project of the LGBT Community Center and maintains the non-commercial, community-first ethos that made the Oscar Wilde Bookshop so important. Essential for visitors interested in LGBTQ+ literature, art, or the political-intellectual dimensions of queer culture.

This book store already has limited hours, 6 hours 5 days a week. I went on Sunday when it should have been open. The receptionist at the ground floor said it was closed for today. If they have enough staff to tell customers that the store is closed, they should update it on Google maps too.
