Marriage equality since Obergefell v. Hodges (26 June 2015). The Respect for Marriage Act (December 2022) provides a congressional floor, requiring federal recognition of all valid same-sex and interracial marriages regardless of future Supreme Court rulings. Bostock v. Clayton County (2020) held that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Gay North Charleston & Park Circle: The Honest 2026 Guide
The honest summary: North Charleston is mostly highways, the airport, the old Navy Base and chain hotels. One corner of it, Park Circle, is where much of Charleston's queer community now lives and drinks. It has one gay bar we can confirm is open (Bar Polari, since July 2024), a second queer bar that has been announced but not confirmed open, the region's LGBTQ+ community centre, an LGBTQ-run thrift store and a week-long Pride every June. It's small enough to see in an evening. Downtown Charleston and Dudley's on Ann are 15 to 20 minutes south by car.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in South Carolina since November 2014. The state has no LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination law and no hate-crime law, and it bans gender-affirming care for minors (H.4624, 2024). North Charleston has no inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance and scores 43/100 on HRC's Municipal Equality Index, although its police department has an LGBTQ liaison.
Where things are
North Charleston is a long, spread-out city on the land between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, north of the Charleston peninsula. Most visitors only see two parts of it, and neither has anything queer. One is the airport and International Boulevard area, with the Coliseum, Convention Center, Performing Arts Center and most of the hotels. The other is the Northwoods shopping strip along I-26.
Park Circle is an older, walkable neighbourhood a few miles east, laid out around a circular park. Its two commercial streets are East Montague Avenue (restaurants, breweries, bars) and Reynolds Avenue, where the queer businesses sit within a few blocks of each other. LGBTQ+ residents have moved here in numbers, and local press now calls it the Lowcountry's gayborhood. Don't expect a district of rainbow flags, though. It's a residential neighbourhood with a handful of queer places.
Bars
Bar Polari (1813 Reynolds Ave, Suite C) opened in July 2024. The Post and Courier described it as North Charleston's first dedicated gay bar. It's a small speakeasy-style cocktail bar with about 50 seats, owned by Brent Compagni and named after the old British gay slang. There's no dance floor. The only food is grilled cheese, and you can bring your own. Listed hours are 4–10pm Monday, 4pm–midnight Tuesday to Thursday, 4pm–2am Friday and Saturday, and 2–10pm Sunday. Its calendar includes drag brunches, bingo, trivia, Drag Race watch parties, and lesbian and sapphic nights. Those nights are also posted on AFFA's and Charleston Pride's event pages.
The Velvet Pony (2025 Reynolds Ave) is a queer bar and community space from Cat Forrester and chef Lazer Kotowich. Plans include cocktails named after queer icons, a patio and gender-neutral bathrooms. In August 2026, QNotes reported that it had not opened yet and was aiming to open by the autumn. We couldn't confirm an opening date, so check its Instagram before you go.
For a dance floor or a drag show most nights, go downtown to Dudley's on Ann (42 Ann St), Charleston's long-running gay bar. See our Charleston guide.
The We Are Family community centre at 3265 N Carolina Ave opened in June 2025. Live 5 News reported it as North Charleston's first LGBTQIA+ centre. We Are Family is South Carolina's oldest LGBTQ+ youth organisation (founded 1995). The same building houses the offices of Charleston Pride and of the Alliance For Full Acceptance (AFFA), the region's main LGBTQ+ advocacy group.
Closet Case Thrift Store (1801 Reynolds Ave, Unit B) is We Are Family's thrift shop. It opened in 2019 and bills itself as the only LGBT-owned and operated thrift store in South Carolina. Proceeds fund the youth programmes, and the shop gives free chest binders and tuck kits to young people aged 24 and under. We Are Family lists its hours as 11am–7pm Wednesday to Saturday and noon–6pm Sunday.
Palmetto Community Care (formerly Lowcountry AIDS Services) is the Lowcountry's HIV service organisation. It offers HIV testing, help getting PrEP and case management.
Park Circle Pride is the neighbourhood's own Pride, run by Vive Le Rock Productions with the Park Circle Business Collective. The sixth edition ran from 2 to 7 June 2026 with more than 40 events. It opened with a flag raising at Commonhouse Aleworks and raised money for AFFA and We Are Family. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing.
Charleston Pride takes place in October. The parade is in downtown Charleston, but the festival is now held in North Charleston. It was at The Refinery in 2025. In 2026 it is at Building 64 on the former Navy Base on Saturday 17 October, 11am–6pm, with free entry and an after-party at the same venue. The Starlight Motor Inn hosts the Pride weekend pool party.
The North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center book touring drag and comedy acts, such as Bianca Del Rio in March 2027. These are ticketed one-off shows.
Closed or changed
The Sparrow (1078 E Montague Ave) was a Park Circle bar with a queer following. It closed in January 2024, after almost 12 years, when its lease wasn't renewed.
Black Diamondz Lounge (3705 St Johns Ave) is still open, but it's a general neighbourhood bar and lounge. Some websites list it as gay. We found no independent queer source that does, so we don't list it.
AFFA's old "Equality Hub" address at 1801 Reynolds Ave, Unit A, is out of date. AFFA is now at 3265 N Carolina Ave, Suite 202.
Saunas and cruising
There is no gay sauna or bathhouse in North Charleston or anywhere else in the Charleston area. The nearest are in Charlotte and Atlanta. We don't list outdoor cruising areas.
Where to stay
Almost every hotel in North Charleston is a chain near the airport, the Coliseum or I-26. They're cheaper than downtown and easy if you have a car, but none is within walking distance of Park Circle. The exception is the Starlight Motor Inn (3245 Rivers Ave), a restored 1961 motel listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a pool, a restaurant and a cocktail lounge, and it's a short drive from Reynolds Avenue. See all North Charleston hotels.
You'll need a car or rideshare. Park Circle is about 10 minutes from the airport and 15–20 minutes from downtown Charleston. CARTA buses run, but they're slow at night.
A good evening is dinner on East Montague Avenue, then Bar Polari. Note that Bar Polari closes at 10pm on Sundays and Mondays.
In October, the Pride festival is in North Charleston, but the parade and most of the hotel demand are downtown.
Charleston International Airport (CHS) is inside North Charleston itself.
A few words
The language here is English. You'll hear "Lowcountry" for the whole coastal region and "the Neck" for the strip between North Charleston and the peninsula. Bar Polari takes its name from Polari, the old British gay slang, in which bona means good and omi-palone means a gay man.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Bar Polari (1813 Reynolds Ave, Park Circle) has been open since July 2024 and is a small gay cocktail bar with drag brunches, bingo, trivia and sapphic nights. A second queer bar, The Velvet Pony (2025 Reynolds Ave), has been announced, but we couldn't confirm it had opened as of October 2026.
It is the nearest thing the area has to one. Park Circle has Charleston's LGBTQ+ community centre (We Are Family and AFFA at 3265 N Carolina Ave), a gay bar, the LGBTQ-run Closet Case thrift store and its own Pride week. It is still mostly a residential neighbourhood, so don't expect a strip of gay bars.
Early June. The 6th edition ran 2–7 June 2026 with more than 40 events, organised by Vive Le Rock Productions and the Park Circle Business Collective. The 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026.
Yes, in recent years. The parade is in downtown Charleston, but the festival was held at The Refinery in North Charleston in 2025 and at Building 64 on the former Navy Base on Saturday 17 October 2026 (11am–6pm, free entry).
No. The Charleston area has no gay sauna or bathhouse; the nearest are in Charlotte and Atlanta. We don't list outdoor cruising areas.
Park Circle is relaxed and openly queer-friendly. Elsewhere in North Charleston, use normal caution at night. South Carolina has no LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination or hate-crime law, and the city has no inclusive ordinance (HRC score 43/100), which matters most for trans visitors.
