Hotel Monaco Portland
Visitors frequently praise the Hotel Monaco Portland for its friendly and helpful staff, convenient downtown location, and spacious, well-appointed rooms with vintage charm. However, common complaints include high extra charges for amenities like parking and water, and some guests found the hotel's condition and services did not meet expectations for its price point, with one reviewer noting peeling wallpaper and another a view of a trash-filled alley.

A group of is stayed for two nights for a graduation celebration. I come to Portland every few months and like to try different hotels downtown. The Royal Sonesta seemed like a great choice for room size and location. The good: friendly, helpful staff. Location is good. Rooms are large and well appointed. The bad: our one person who required ADA accommodation had to wait 2.5 hours past 4:00PM check in before her room was ready. By then we had activities to attend so this person was not able to check in and get ready prior. Hotel staff were helpful but did not offer compensation equal to the delay. During our stay we encountered several people who were having drug or mental health issues, including 12:30 in the morning when we were woken to screams of someone not doing well. It took some time to get back to sleep because we were shaken by the experience. Given all the options for hotels in downtown Portland, The Royal Sonesta will not be one I choose to stay at in the future.
If you love staying in historical, vintage, yet updated old hotels, this will be your vibe. Our room was spacious and tastefully decorated. We arrived late, so missed the opportunity to try most nearby restaurants, but we did take a nice walk that evening to a Shake Shack not too far away. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. There were string lights in the trees and mistly normal looking people out and about in the evening. If we ever need to stay in Portland again, this is where we'll go. Parking was limited with the exception of valet parking fir which there is a charge. Limited parking is to be expected though, considering this is an old hotel, built in a very old city, and like most old cities, they were not built to accommodate the traffic of today. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend it to others.
Attended an alumni breakfast here. The catering and drinks were all delicious, the service was great, and the space and hotel itself lovely and enjoyable. Even though I'm a local, I'll look for an opportunity to stay here to enjoy it again.
A 4-star hotel? That's a joke. None of its features or services meet 4-star standards. The pictures are completely misleading. Poor quality furniture, smelly and dirty carpets, questionable towels, and terrible parking. Everything is an extra charge—even water. Ugh… It really feels like they are just nickel-and-diming you and couldn't care less about their guests.
Wonderful little spot that is close to great things downtown. Happened to arrive on the day of the Rose Parade which was just off the path of the hotel. $55 valet parking. Bar/restaurant is open minimal hours
