Fantasia Fair is the oldest transgender event in the world — a week-long conference and social programme held in Provincetown each October since 1975. The event predates the mainstream visibility of transgender identity by decades and has served as a gathering point, educational forum, and community celebration for trans people across fifty years. The Fair's programming includes workshops, panel discussions, keynote speakers, social events, and the opportunity to spend a week in Provincetown — one of the most socially accepting small communities in the United States — as one's authentic self. Fantasia Fair draws participants from across the United States and internationally; its longevity and the depth of its programming make it genuinely unlike any other trans event in terms of historical significance. The October timing places it during Provincetown's off-season, which gives the event an intimate quality: the town is quiet, the participants are spread across the available accommodation, and the experience of Provincetown in autumn — the light, the empty beaches, the sense of a community at rest — is different from and in some ways more profound than the summer experience.
