San Diego Pride
About This Event
San Diego Pride is one of California's biggest Prides, and the organization traces itself to 1974, when it began as a program of the city's Center for Social Services. It runs in mid-July, not June, which is why some travellers add it after the June Prides elsewhere. The organizers say the parade draws more than 250,000 supporters; that is their own figure, and we found no independent count.
The parade is on Saturday morning and is free. It starts at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Avenue and Normal Street and covers about 1.5 miles through Hillcrest, the city's gay neighbourhood, toward Balboa Park. The festival is different: it is ticketed and fenced at Marston Point in Balboa Park across Saturday and Sunday. In 2026 general admission was $45 for one day or $75 for the weekend if bought ahead, rising to $48 and $85 on Pride weekend; seniors paid $15 and high-school students and younger got in free with a box-office ticket. Ticket and drink sales fund the organization, so this is not a free street fair. The week before brings the Dyke March, a pub crawl and the Friday Spirit of Stonewall Rally.
Get to the parade route early for shade and a view, because University Avenue fills fast. Hillcrest bars run lines all weekend, and hotels in Hillcrest and downtown are the first to go. Coastal July weather is usually mild, but the sun at Marston Point is strong in the afternoon.
The last edition held its parade on 18 July 2026 under the theme 'Pride Shines On', with the festival on 18 and 19 July and Pride events running from 11 July. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked; the parade usually falls on the third Saturday of July.
