San Diego hotels cost less than San Francisco or Los Angeles, and the weather's usually better. If you're here for the LGBTQ+ scene, Hillcrest is the easiest place to stay. Most bars and restaurants are walkable, and it feels like a real neighborhood, not just a tourist trap.
Downtown's fine too, if you want more hotel choices or cheaper rates. The Gaslamp Quarter gets lively at night, and Hillcrest is only a 10-15 minute ride away. If you're splitting your time between gay nightlife and sights like the zoo, Balboa Park, or the harbor, downtown puts you closer to those daytime activities.
Where to Stay
Hillcrest
This is the main neighborhood for LGBTQ+ visitors. You'll find smaller hotels, B&Bs, and apartment rentals. Stay on or near University Avenue, and you can walk to basically everything gay. Hillcrest is quieter at night than downtown—bars close at 2 am, and the streets calm down fast. Good for sleeping, good for going out.
North Park and Mission Hills
Both neighborhoods touch Hillcrest, and you can walk between them. North Park has a younger, artsy feel and good restaurants. Mission Hills is residential and quieter. Hotels in both usually cost a bit less than in Hillcrest proper. If you want to feel like a local, not just a tourist, either works.
Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter
More hotel options here, larger chains, and often cheaper nightly rates than Hillcrest's boutiques. The downside: you're further from the gay scene. For a trip that mixes convention events, harbor activities, or downtown dining, this is the practical pick. A rideshare to Hillcrest takes about ten minutes and costs a few bucks.
Mission Bay and Pacific Beach
If you're here for beach time, Mission Bay and Pacific Beach are about 15 minutes northwest of Hillcrest. Hotels range from budget beach spots to comfier ones. Great for the beach; less convenient for the gay scene. A rideshare makes it doable if you're spending days at the beach and evenings in Hillcrest.
The Hotels
- Hillcrest Inn San Diego — This gay-friendly hotel is right on 5th Avenue in Hillcrest. Rooms are comfortable, and you can walk to all the bars and restaurants. It's an ideal base for San Diego's gay neighborhood.
Booking Tips
San Diego Pride in mid-July is the only time Hillcrest hotels book up well in advance. Plan two to three months ahead if you're coming for Pride. The festival at Balboa Park brings in tens of thousands, so Hillcrest hotels fill up.
Outside of Pride, San Diego hotels are usually available with reasonable notice. Summer is the city's busiest season, so July and August rates are higher everywhere. Spring and fall give you the best combination of good weather and decent prices.
San Diego has a strong Airbnb and VRBO market in Hillcrest and nearby neighborhoods if you prefer an apartment. A flat in Hillcrest can be a good deal for a week-long stay.
