About this place Cowgirl BBQ

Cowgirl BBQ on South Guadalupe Street is an institution of Santa Fe's social life that transcends any single demographic category — a large, rambling adobe restaurant and bar complex with an extensive patio, live music most evenings, a menu of New Mexico and Texas barbecue, a full bar, and an atmosphere of casual good humour that makes it welcoming to everyone. The LGBTQ+ community has claimed Cowgirl as a gathering point for decades, and the bar's culture reflects this: the staff are welcoming, the crowd is mixed, and the combination of good food, outdoor seating, and live music creates the kind of social environment where different groups of people naturally find themselves in conversation. South Guadalupe Street runs south from the Railyard district, and the restaurant's location makes it a practical starting point for an evening that might continue to Revolution Bar or end on the patio with a final margarita as the desert air cools. The extensive patio is the primary asset in good weather: Santa Fe's climate provides reliably dry evenings from May through October, and the high desert air at 7,000 feet carries a coolness even in summer that makes outdoor dining and drinking a pleasure. For visitors to Santa Fe, Cowgirl BBQ is the essential first evening stop — a place to orient to the city's particular character over a plate of ribs and a New Mexico green chile bloody mary.

My experience at Cowgirl was disappointing, primarily due to the food. I got a combo BBQ platter to try the chicken, ribs, and brisket. I had a of mac & cheese and we got chips, salsa, guacamole, and queso as an appetizer. The queso, guacamole, and mac & cheese was good; everything else was underwhelming. My favorite part of a BBQ restaurant is the tender high quality meat that has been so well prepared that it reminds me that someone with a huge amount of skill and experience prepared it. Cowgirl did not deliver this. The chicken was dry, the brisket was incredibly fatty (40-70% fat) on my 4 strips of brisket. And the ribs were average. The BBQ sauce the food came with was delicious but it could not mask the fact that the meat was subpar and not well prepared. In addition the service was average; I had to call a waiter to get a refill and my sister didn't receive her side of mashed potatoes until about 10 minutes after the rest of the food came out because the waiter went back to collect from the kitchen and just didn't come back for 10 minutes where we had to remind him again about the mashed potatoes. The restaurant was ~70% at capacity so it was busy but there were 4-5 staff members (college age) just talking off to the side for most of my visit. The attentiveness was lacking. Overall I was disappointed in the experience but this was my first and only visit here so far. The parking is limited and hard in a tight space towards the back of the building. The food price to service & quality ratio was disproportionate and of my family with me (five people) only my dad was well pleased (he got a sandwich), the other four of us we left wishing we had chosen somewhere else to eat. I don't like writing a review this critical off of a single experience as it could have been a genuinely once in a blue moon off day, however too many important pieces of the dining experience fell short of hopes and expectations that I hope the management can view it as constructive criticism instead of just complaining.

Food was not good.. and the service was horrible. We were the only paying customers actually sat in the dining room and still service was bad the burger shaped like an egg and a very small Patty at that. The meat had no seasoning whatsoever and the fries were as soggy as they could be. My how this place has fallen. I will not be going back.

Great BBQ and a fun atmosphere. We got the sampler plate and everything was good, but the brisket was the best.
