Springfield, the biggest city in western Massachusetts, is a manufacturing town on the Connecticut River. Its LGBTQ+ scene isn't huge, but the area has a strong queer past, especially since it's so close to Northampton—one of America's gayest small towns.
Springfield
- Oz Bar Springfield is the city's main gay bar. You'll find drag shows, a dance floor, and a friendly mixed LGBTQ+ crowd here. It's the center of gay nightlife in town.

Northampton — Go Here Instead
Northampton, or "Noho" as locals call it, is 20 minutes north of Springfield. It's a small town with an outsized queer presence. With Smith College and five other colleges in the Pioneer Valley, it's been a lesbian and queer cultural center since the 1980s. Northampton has several gay bars, like Diva's Nightclub, great restaurants, independent bookstores (including Pride and Joy), and a visible LGBTQ+ community everywhere you look. Northampton Pride in May is one of New England's best parties.
Pioneer Valley
This stretch of the Connecticut River valley—Northampton, Amherst, Greenfield—has been queer-friendly for decades. That's largely thanks to the Five College consortium: Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and UMass Amherst. If you're staying in Springfield because it's cheaper, Northampton is an easy drive for the actual queer cultural scene.
