About this place Bastille

Bastille is a friendly neighborhood gay bar in Soulard, St. Louis's oldest and most historic district. Set in a classic red-brick corner building on Russell Boulevard, it draws a mixed, welcoming crowd for drag shows, karaoke and easygoing drinks. Away from the busier Grove, Bastille anchors Soulard's small but loyal LGBTQ+ scene and leans local and low-key rather than big-club — the kind of place where regulars know the bartenders and newcomers are quickly folded in.

What you will notice about this bar is extremely unhealthy looking people gorging on an orgy of alcohol and.cigarettes.. there was also someone shot to death outside a nearby bar the other night...

My openly gay friend and I went to Bastille to be around other queer people. We were kicked out for absolutely no reason and no explanation. It was extremely apparent that we were both gay because we were talking about how we were so excited to be in an inclusive space with other gay people. After getting our drinks, we were sitting at a table, whispering and minding our business, when the owner comes up to our table and tells us to leave. We left the bar, and as we were in shock and trying to debrief, the owner steps outside the bar and screams at us to “GO.” After reading a couple other reviews about situations on par with mine, it’s very obvious this is a pattern with the bar. Take your business to another queer establishment. This is not the one. Exclusionary and unsafe.
