The honest summary:

Bergamo has one LGBTQ+ bar, Mamo's, one gay sauna, The City Sauna, an active Arcigay committee and a Pride march that has run since 2018. That’s it. No gay club. No gay district. If you want a bigger night out, Milan’s Porta Venezia scene is about 50 minutes away by train. Most people treat Bergamo as a calm base with a good bar, not a nightlife destination.

What the scene looks like

Bergamo is a city of about 122,000 people in Lombardy, split between the walled Città Alta on the hill and the 19th-century Città Bassa below. The queer venues are all in or near the lower town. Città Alta is beautiful, and it's where you go for dinner and views, not nightlife. ARCO, the Italian gay club network, lists exactly two Bergamo venues: Mamo's and The City Sauna. That matches what we found everywhere else.

Bars

Mamo's (Via Evaristo Baschenis 13, Città Bassa) has been the city's LGBTQ+ bar since 1999. It calls itself Bergamo's historic LGBTQ+ venue, and Tripadvisor lists it as Mamo's American Gay Bar. It opens from 17:00 to 2am every day except Monday. Tuesday and Sunday are karaoke nights; Thursday is the Single Party. It's small, casual and mostly local. Drinks are fairly priced. Karaoke sometimes stops around 1am due to noise complaints. ARCO card holders get a free shot.

There is no gay club. Queer party nights appear around Pride: in 2026, the official after-party ran at Daste, a former power station now used for events, from midnight to 3am. Follow @bergamopride for one-off nights.

Sauna

The City Sauna (Via della Clementina 8) is Bergamo's only gay sauna. It's for men only. ARCO lists it as founded in 1990, and you need an ARCO card to get in. It's spread over three floors. The basement has two Finnish saunas, a steam bath, a hydromassage tub and a counter-current pool. Upstairs there's a bar lounge, a relaxation room, a labyrinth and private cabins. It's open 13:00 to 21:00, closed Tuesday. Prices aren't published, so call +39 035 240418. Google reviews are mixed (3.5), though the club says it has recently renovated.

Cruising

We found no current, reliable information on outdoor cruising in Bergamo. The spots in local histories date from the 1980s and 1990s. The sauna is the only dedicated venue. Apps are widely used, but Italy has public decency laws, so keep it private.

Community and health

Arcigay Bergamo Cives (Via Sant'Alessandro 14) has been active since 2009. It runs a listening and anti-discrimination service, prevention work, and sport and hiking groups. Contact it first at info@arcigaybergamo.it, since there are no published drop-in hours.

SOS Iride (Via Nastro Azzurro 1A) is an anti-discrimination centre for LGBTQIA+ people. It has short weekly opening slots, so check sosiride.org before going.

Checkpoint Bergamo Fast-Track City (Via Moroni 93) gives free, anonymous rapid tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis on Wednesday evenings, 18:00–22:00. It has been open since June 2020. Book through friendlytest.it.

Pride

Bergamo Pride is young. The first march was in 2018, and the 2019 edition was described as the second. It ran in June in 2024 (15 June) and 2025, then moved to Saturday 16 May in 2026. That's the eve of 17 May, the international day against homophobia. The 2026 march started at 4pm from Piazzale Marconi in front of the station. In 2024, the city council withdrew its patronage after a row over the organisers' statement on Israeli flags. We found no reliable attendance figures for recent editions. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing.

Bergamo Pride ODV (bergamopride.org) also runs a Safer Space Network of shops and bars that commit to being welcoming.

Where to stay

There are no gay hotels in Bergamo. All the hotels we list are mainstream places. Stay in Città Bassa if you want the bar and the station within walking distance: Petronilla and Excelsior San Marco are both central. Stay in Città Alta for the views and the quiet. GombitHotel, Hotel Piazza Vecchia and Le Funi are inside or just above the walls. The upper town is car-restricted, so use the funicular, which has run since 1887.

Practical tips

    • Orio al Serio airport (BGY) is about 5 km from the centre, and the airport bus to the station takes around 15 minutes.
    • Trains to Milan take about 50 minutes. If you want more than one bar in a night, plan a Milan evening.
    • Brescia is 50 km east. It has its own queer bar and a large Pride on the first Saturday of September.
    • Mamo's is closed on Monday and the sauna on Tuesday.

    Closed or changed

    • Ubu Bar (Via San Tomaso): Old directories listed it as gay-friendly, but we found no LGBTQ+ evidence outside our own old listing, so it's no longer listed.
    • Nite Lite (Via Baschenis 9): The 1990s gay club that hosted Mister Gay contests. It closed long ago, and the space later became a straight bar.
    • Old guides that place Bergamo Pride in July or say it started in the early 2000s are wrong. It began in 2018 and is held in spring or early summer.

A few words in Italian

Locale gay means gay venue. Tessera ARCO is the ARCO membership card for saunas and clubs. Città Alta / Città Bassa are the upper and lower town. Funicolare is the funicular. Test HIV gratuito e anonimo means free, anonymous HIV test.
