On a Saturday night, the sound of bass and laughter spills out of the Pink Triangle, Newcastle's compact gay scene. It's a few streets between Central Station and the arena, where you'll find a big club, cabaret and drag bars, a leather bar, and a sauna, all within stumbling distance. Don't expect polished minimalism - this is a place for karaoke, drag, and a very friendly welcome.
Legal in one line: sex between men was partly decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967, the age of consent has been equal at 16 since 2001, same-sex couples have been able to marry since March 2014, and the Equality Act 2010 bans discrimination by businesses. But be aware: sex in public is a separate matter, and can be prosecuted as outraging public decency.
The Pink Triangle
Newcastle's gay village is tucked away on the western edge of the city centre, between Central Station and the Utilita Arena. The bars line Scotswood Road, Westmorland Road, and Churchill Street, and most don't charge entry, so you can easily bar-hop. Everything is within a five-minute walk of the station.
Bars and clubs

Powerhouse · Westmorland Road, by the coach station
This is the big club of the Pink Triangle, with a story that goes back to the 1980s. Today, it fills a multi-storey building with several rooms and a roof terrace. You can buy wristbands at the bar in Switch. The smaller sister bar, The Pink Room, is entered from the rear of the building, and is open Thursday to Sunday from late evening, with free entry before 02:00 on many nights.
Rusty's · Unit 3–4, International Centre for Life, Times Square
This cabaret bar is in the middle of the Pink Triangle, with drag hosts, live shows, and DJs playing cheesy pop and old-school tunes. It's loud, busy, and a party - expect cheap drinks and a mixed crowd.

Boulevard · 3–9 Churchill Street
Newcastle's cabaret theatre hosts proper staged drag and comedy shows, with a troupe of Broadway-style dancers and table service. Shows run in seasons, so book ahead and check the schedule before you go.
The Yard · 2 Scotswood Road
This corner bar has a big outdoor seating area, regular drag acts downstairs, and a cocktail lounge upstairs. It's the easiest place to start an evening, especially when the sun's out - and it's open from mid-afternoon until 02:00.

Switch · 4–10 Scotswood Road
Next door to The Yard, Switch has two floors of music with DJs playing chart, dance, house, and pop, a roof terrace, and free entry. It often hosts drag nights and Drag Idol heats, and works as the warm-up bar for Powerhouse.
The Eagle · 42 Scotswood Road
The Pink Triangle's leather, denim, and uniform bar has a dark front bar and a smaller basement. It's not a dance venue, but a place to meet and cruise - with free entry and a men-only downstairs.

The Tipsy Cow · 85–89 Blandford Street
This gay-friendly bar is on the edge of the village, and is best known for its drag-hosted Saturday bottomless brunch with a barbecue menu. It's also a great spot for terrace drinks on sunny days.
Sauna

Number 52 · 52 Scotswood Road, NE4 7JD
Newcastle's gay sauna has a discreet rear entrance, and offers a 14-person sauna, steam room, seven-person hydrotherapy pool, relaxation lounge, cabins, and a full licensed bar. It's open weekdays from 11:00 to 22:00, and nonstop from Friday 11:00 to Sunday 22:00 - but check the facilities before you go, as some have been out of action recently.
Newcastle Pride
Newcastle Pride took place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July 2026, with a free march and the ticketed Pride Arena in Times Square. The festival included a family and youth zone, a market village, and a health and wellbeing zone - and was headlined by Nadine Coyle, Katy B, and Drag Race UK's Danny Beard and Bimini. Dates for 2027 haven't been announced yet.

Community and health
- MESMAC North East: an LGBTQ+ community and sexual-health organisation - contact them for testing, condoms, and support.
- Be: Trans Support and Community: a support and community group for trans people in the city.
- Curious Arts, the LGBTQ+ arts charity behind Pride, runs events across the region throughout the year.
- If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: contact an NHS sexual health clinic or go to an emergency department quickly.
- Motel One Newcastle, 15–25 High Bridge: a design budget hotel in the city centre.
- Crowne Plaza Newcastle – Stephenson Quarter: in the Stephenson Quarter beside Central Station, a short walk from the Pink Triangle.
- Hotel Gotham, Pilgrim Street: a boutique option in the city centre.
- See all gay-friendly hotels in Newcastle.
- Getting there: trains from London King's Cross take about three hours. Newcastle International Airport is about five miles from the centre and linked by the Metro's Green line.
- The Metro: Tyne and Wear's light railway is the quickest way between the airport, the centre, Gateshead, and the coast; Central Station has its own Metro stop next to the Pink Triangle. The new Stadler trains took over fully in summer 2026, but the Metro does not run all night, so check last trains on the Nexus website or app before a late one.
- Cards and cash: contactless is accepted almost everywhere; carry a little cash for cloakrooms and the odd small bar.
- Consent and chems: "no" is always enough. If GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose someone else. In an emergency, call 999 or 112.
- Howay! – come on! (as in Howay the lads).
- Wey aye – yes, of course.
- Canny – good, nice; also "quite" (canny busy).
- Pet / hinny – love, darling (said to anyone).
- Gan – go (we're gannin' oot, we're going out).
- Divvent – don't.
- Bonny – pretty, good-looking.
- The Toon – the town centre, and Newcastle United.
