The Central African Republic is under Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisories (reissued January 2026): armed groups control large areas outside Bangui, kidnapping is frequent, embassy staff move in armored vehicles under curfew, and post-election tension persists. For any traveler the conflict outranks every other consideration — we say that plainly instead of writing itinerary copy over it.

The legal picture

Private, consensual same-sex relations are legal — but Article 85 criminalizes 'acts against nature committed in public', applied only to same-sex conduct: public expression of affection between same-sex partners can mean six months to two years in prison. The local organization Alternatives Centrafrique has documented arbitrary arrests on mere allegations. CAR did sign the UN's protective statement — one of few African states to do so — and MSM and trans women are named in the national health plan: threads of official recognition inside a broken state.

Aid and diplomatic personnel are Bangui's only real foreign presence. Inside that reality: zero public expression (Art. 85 is the law), maximum discretion, organizational security protocols above all. For everyone else — support Central Africans through international channels, and wait for a different year.
