Khumbulani Pride
About This Event
Khumbulani, which translates to "remember" in isiXhosa, isn't your average Pride event. It started in Khayelitsha in 2013 to commemorate LGBTQ+ people killed in hate crimes in the Western Cape. The goal was to bring Pride to the townships, where most homophobic attacks occur.
It's a straightforward, somber march: participants walk to or past police stations, display victims' names and photos, and submit a memorandum about unsolved cases to the police. In 2023, co-founder Funeka Soldaat announced she'd step back and pass the torch to younger activists at Free Gender. The following year, Free Gender and Triangle Project co-organised the event.
The 10th march, in May 2023, began at Harare police station in Khayelitsha and ended at Seek Lounge. A year later, on Saturday, 18 May 2024, it moved through Gugulethu and concluded at Nyanga police station. GroundUp estimated over 150 marchers, while Elitsha reported more than 300. Pamela Jack, whose son Lonwabo was killed in Nyanga East in 2021, was among them.
It's been held in May, not September. As of now, there's no record of a 2025 or 2026 edition, and nothing's been announced for 2027.
