About this place Gay & Lesbian Holocaust Memorial

In Green Park, Darlinghurst, a pink enamelled-steel prism pierces a grid of black steel columns arranged as a fractured Star of David. This is Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial, unveiled in 2001 after a decade of community fundraising — one of the first memorials anywhere to commemorate the pink- and black-triangle prisoners of the Nazi regime. Designers Russell Rodrigo and Jennifer Gamble etched the steel with imagery drawn from Sachsenhausen, and the inscription reads in part: 'We remember you who have suffered or died at the hands of others.' The siting is deliberate — directly beside the Sydney Jewish Museum, binding the memories together rather than ranking them. Visiting: the park is free and always open, at the heart of Darlinghurst — Qtopia in the former police station is across the corner, and Oxford Street a short walk away, placing the memorial inside the living neighbourhood it mourns for. A quiet stop; give it the minutes it asks.
