About this place The Newtown Hotel

The Newtown Hotel on King Street is the anchor of Sydney's inner-west queer scene — a pub that serves the Newtown and Erskineville communities with a mixed LGBTQ+ clientele that is noticeably more diverse, more alternative, and more lesbian-and-queer-identified than the Oxford Street mainstream. Newtown's character — arty, alternative, politically engaged, bookshop-dense — is embodied by the Newtown Hotel. The pub runs entertainment and events throughout the week, including drag nights that have a different flavour from the Oxford Street norm: more experimental, more rooted in queer arts traditions, less circuit-oriented. The crowd at the Newtown Hotel ranges across the LGBTQ+ spectrum with a particularly strong representation of lesbian, bisexual, trans, and non-binary patrons. King Street itself provides context: the Bookshop Darlinghurst equivalent in Newtown, queer-friendly cafés, vintage shops, and the University of Sydney's proximity all contribute to an intellectual and creative atmosphere that distinguishes Newtown from Darlinghurst. For LGBTQ+ visitors who find Oxford Street's mainstream scene too familiar or too commercial, the Newtown Hotel is the essential alternative — a pub that reflects a different and equally valid dimension of Sydney's queer culture.

Friendly smiling staff, great menu , we ordered grilled halloumi & salad, mushrooms with rice & salad, chicken burger with fries . Peroni beer & lemons squash for the driver. Served in less than 5mins , clean cutlery , napkins & a clean table. Air con , welcoming vibe & again staff who smiled & enjoyed their work activity. Locals obviously know the venue , visitors to Sydney city - highly recommend . $ value , excellent $80 the 3 plates & 2 drinks. A great afternoon

We had some happy hour drinks and then snacks from the K Town menu .....ohhmmm the Vegan KFC and fries with cheesy kimchy sauce was delicious!!!! So good, my carnivore friends started stealing!!! The staff were also very wonderful. Thanks :) We ate it too quick to leave a decent picture.

After spending the day exploring the streets we had a final pit stop. There is a considerable number of seats on the lower level, but even more upstairs and on the balcony. The balcony provides a nice view along King Street so is a good place to people watch.

Went for a work lunch and was pleasantly surprised. I had the salmon with spiced potato. This dish is a dead set 10/10, absolutely delicious, one of the ladies from my work got the risotto and it was huge. I’ll get that next time I go. Highly recommended and the staff were lovely!

My extended family and I chose this establishment for dinner on a weekday evening. The hotel gives off a warm and cosy vibe and it was great to see all the pride colours and gender diversity posters/events etc. proudly on display. The menu catered for everyone, including numerous meatless dishes for a vegetarian amongst us. The meals were all delicious and there was a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. A pleasant evening indeed.

Nice pub with a vibe more like a sports bar, with lots of screens throughout to keep up with the action. Staff are friendly, service is quick, plenty of seating for different group sizes and a nice atmosphere. Great option in the nearby area for a drink!

A very normal pub now. Reasonable space, especially upstairs, average drinks and food, high prices, but better than most pubs along King St.

Hadn't visited in many years and the balcony was an unexpected pleasure. We watched the sunset over the street facade while enjoying the local beer and a meal. Service was good. Chips were great.

Just had a terrible pizza, the worst meal Ive had in a pub in Sydney. Burnt to crisp. Complained and was told " our pizzas are all like this they are wood fired!" What rubbish. Don' bother with Newtown. Everything is overpriced and poor quality.

Won't return. Wasn't treated especially well. High prices for the food and beverages we received.....
