Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is the biggest LGBTQ+ festival in the Southern Hemisphere, and the reason so many queer travellers plan an Australian summer trip around late February. It began as a protest march on 24 June 1978 that ended in police violence and 53 arrests. The event moved to summer a few years later and grew into a full festival season, but the 78ers still lead the parade, and First Nations and trans communities have a central place in it.
The season starts with Fair Day, a free all-ages Sunday in Victoria Park with stalls, performers and a famous dog show. After that come two to three weeks of theatre, comedy, art, talks, sport and club nights across the city, most of them ticketed, plus the Bondi Beach Party on the sand by the Bondi Pavilion. The parade up Oxford Street on the final Saturday is free to watch from the kerb, with paid seating and premium viewing available. The Sunday after the parade, the Laneway party takes over the streets around the Beresford in Surry Hills. The big indoor Mardi Gras Party has traditionally followed the parade; that one is ticketed, and tickets go fast.
The pattern runs from mid-February to early March. It is late summer: hot days, warm nights, occasional storms. Flights to Sydney and rooms in Darlinghurst, Surry Hills and Potts Point get very expensive, so book months ahead, and remember that Australian visa or ETA paperwork needs sorting out before you fly.
The latest festival ran from 13 February to 1 March 2026 under the theme ECSTATICA, with Fair Day on 15 February and the 48th parade on 28 February, which drew more than 10,000 marchers and an estimated 250,000 spectators. Money is an issue: the official Mardi Gras Party was cancelled for 2026 after losing money every year since 2020, and the CEO said it would come back in 2027. The 2027 parade has been announced for Saturday 6 March 2027. The full 2027 festival dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
