About This Event

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is the Southern Hemisphere's largest and most internationally celebrated LGBTQ+ event — an annual parade along Oxford Street from Hyde Park to Moore Park that draws over 300,000 spectators and has been held every year since 1978. The parade begins after dark on the first Saturday of March and runs for several hours, with floats of extraordinary elaboration representing community groups, LGBTQ+ organisations, corporate sponsors, international delegations, and the Dykes on Bikes motorcade that traditionally leads the procession. The Mardi Gras began on 24 June 1978 as a protest march to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising; police arrested 53 participants that night and their names were published in the Sydney Morning Herald the following morning. That act of police aggression galvanised Sydney's LGBTQ+ community; the march continued the following year and the year after, gradually transforming from protest into celebration. Today the Mardi Gras parade is one of the defining events of the Australian cultural calendar — a spectacle of costume, music, and community expression that draws international visitors and media coverage and has no equivalent in the Southern Hemisphere. Oxford Street is closed to traffic from mid-afternoon; spectators line both sides of the route. Arriving early to secure a viewing position on Oxford Street near Taylor Square is strongly recommended.
