El Halloween Carnaval de West Hollywood comenzó en 1987 y se convirtió en una de las mayores fiestas callejeras de Halloween de Estados Unidos, famosa por sus elaborados disfraces individuales y grupales en Santa Monica Boulevard. No es un evento del Orgullo, pero tiene lugar en el corazón del Rainbow District de la ciudad, y la multitud y los disfraces son tan queer como se puede ser en Halloween.
Sé claro sobre lo que es ahora, porque se ha reducido. El evento se celebró cada año hasta 2019, con varios escenarios y presentadores famosos. El Ayuntamiento lo canceló en 2020 y 2021 debido a la pandemia, y en 2022 optó por financiar pequeños eventos en bares locales. Regresó en 2023 a una escala reducida, y las ediciones de 2024 y 2025 mantuvieron ese formato: una fiesta callejera gratuita de una noche de 18:00 a 23:00 en un tramo cerrado de una milla de Santa Monica Boulevard entre Doheny Drive y La Cienega, con un escenario de DJ en San Vicente, food trucks y los disfraces. No se permite beber en la calle, las mochilas están prohibidas (las bolsas transparentes están bien), y la ciudad desaconseja traer niños y mascotas.
Se celebra el 31 de octubre, sin importar el día de la semana. La verdadera acción es el desfile de disfraces por las aceras y los bares de la zona, The Abbey, Rocco's y los demás, que cobran entrada y tienen largas colas; llega temprano o reserva una mesa. Los hoteles de West Hollywood son pequeños y se agotan para Halloween, y los precios de los rideshare después de las 23:00 son brutales, así que quédate a poca distancia si puedes.
