Il Halloween Carnaval di West Hollywood è iniziato nel 1987 ed è diventato una delle più grandi feste di Halloween in strada degli Stati Uniti, famosa per gli elaborati costumi drag e di gruppo su Santa Monica Boulevard. Non è un evento Pride, ma si svolge nel cuore del Rainbow District della città, e la folla e i costumi sono quanto di più queer si possa immaginare per Halloween.
Siate chiari su cosa sia ora, perché si è ridimensionato. L'evento si è svolto ogni anno fino al 2019, con diversi palchi e presentatori celebri. Il Consiglio Comunale lo ha cancellato nel 2020 e 2021 a causa della pandemia, e nel 2022 ha scelto di finanziare piccoli eventi nei bar locali. È tornato nel 2023 su scala ridotta, e le edizioni del 2024 e 2025 hanno mantenuto quel formato: una festa di strada gratuita di una notte, dalle 18:00 alle 23:00, su un tratto chiuso di un miglio di Santa Monica Boulevard tra Doheny Drive e La Cienega, con un palco per DJ a San Vicente, food truck e i costumi. Non è consentito bere per strada, gli zaini sono vietati (le borse trasparenti vanno bene), e la città sconsiglia di portare bambini e animali domestici.
Si svolge il 31 ottobre stesso, qualunque giorno della settimana sia. La vera azione è la sfilata di costumi lungo i marciapiedi e nei bar lungo la strip, The Abbey, Rocco's e gli altri, che fanno pagare l'ingresso e hanno lunghe code; arrivate presto o prenotate un tavolo. Gli hotel di West Hollywood sono piccoli e si esauriscono per Halloween, e i prezzi maggiorati dei rideshare dopo le 23:00 sono brutali, quindi se potete, alloggiate a pochi passi.
L'ultima edizione si è svolta venerdì 31 ottobre 2025, e la città ha descritto la folla solo come migliaia di partecipanti; le stime di grandi folle che vedete online risalgono agli anni precedenti alla pandemia.
