We booked the Falkensteiner Hotel Schloss Velden for one night during the Pentecost holidays as a stopover on our way to Croatia, choosing a suite at a price of around €900 per night. At a hotel of this category – Leading Hotels of the World and 5 stars – one expects correspondingly high standards. Unfortunately, these were not met in several respects. At first glance, the suite made a very good impression. Guests with dogs were also generally considered. However, upon closer inspection, significant deficiencies became apparent: several surfaces were soiled with fingerprints, there was plastic waste behind the crib, and, most shockingly, we found a complete cigarette under the desk. Our dog is only seven months old and could easily have eaten it. In that case, we would have had to immediately consult a veterinarian, which would not only have been extremely stressful but also very expensive. That something like this is overlooked after room cleaning is unacceptable to us in a hotel of this category. After our arrival, we visited the hotel's lakeside restaurant for lunch. We had reserved a table outside, but only learned upon arrival that the area was closed. Prior notification would have been appreciated. Even more disappointing, however, was the food. The two children's schnitzels were of poor quality: the breading had completely separated from the meat, which was gray, dry, and tough. We sent them back. While our children had already finished their side dishes, the newly prepared schnitzels arrived considerably later than the other meals. There was no attempt to compensate for this inconvenience. Unfortunately, the negative impression continued at breakfast the following morning. The Bircher muesli was clearly spoiled and tasted sour and fizzy. After we reported this, the staff acknowledged the problem and removed the muesli. We had already addressed the issues we encountered during our stay. In response, we later found an apology card and three chocolates in our room. This gesture was certainly well-intentioned, but for us as a family of four, it felt rather symbolic and, in our opinion, disproportionate to the problems we encountered – particularly the discovery of a cigarette in our room, the lack of cleanliness, and the subsequent complaints regarding the restaurant and breakfast. Upon check-out, we raised the issues again at reception. The only further concession offered was a waiver of the €20 parking fee. Given the suite price of around €900 per night and the number of justified complaints, we did not consider this an adequate solution. What was particularly disappointing for us was not only the occurrence of the individual problems, but above all the impression that their significance was not truly recognized and that no serious effort was made to address the resulting dissatisfaction among the guests. Schloss Velden is undoubtedly a beautiful hotel in a stunning location. It was all the more disappointing, then, that the cleanliness, the quality of the food, and the handling of justified criticism did not meet the standards one would expect in this price range.
