Brussels' gay bar scene is packed into the Saint-Jacques quarter, centred on the pedestrianised Rue du Marché au Charbon (Kolenmarkt) and the parallel Rue des Pierres, a two-minute walk from the Grand-Place. It's a tight, walkable cluster — you can try half a dozen bars in an evening without planning a route, which is exactly the point.
The Rue du Marché au Charbon
This is the main street, and several of the city's longest-running gay bars are on it or just off it. The mood shifts from door to door: relaxed café-bars where people sit and talk, louder standing-room bars with music at night, and a couple of cruise-leaning spots. Some pull a mixed crowd, but the street is unmistakably the gay heart of the city.
La Démence and the clubs
La Démence is a monthly gay circuit party — an event, not a permanent bar — held at the Fuse club on Rue Blaes in the neighbouring Marolles, a short walk south of Saint-Jacques. On La Démence weekends the international crowd takes over; on other weekends the Saint-Jacques bars are the scene. The two run in parallel.

- La Reserve — One of the oldest and cheapest gay bars in town, a proper local on the Petite Rue au Beurre.
- Le Belgica — A scene institution on the Marché au Charbon; small, historic and heaving at weekends.
- Le Baroque — Relaxed bear bar on the Marché au Charbon.
- Station BXL — Bears and a cruise-friendly crowd, on the Kolenmarkt.
- Homo Erectus — A fun, busy gay bar with good music, at the heart of the strip.
- Stammbar — Men's fetish and cruise bar with a darkroom, open most nights.
- — Small, friendly gay café in the car-free Saint-Jacques quarter.
- Le Dolores — Little terrace bar in the thick of the scene.
- Rooster's — Casual bar with DJs and a sociable, mixed-gay crowd.
- Bar Le Detour — Easy-going bar beside Homo Erectus.
- ChristoBar — Welcoming, well-located bar with a friendly, diverse weekend crowd.
- La Boule Rouge — The karaoke bar everyone ends up in.
- La Moon — Late-opening bar on the Marché au Charbon.
- Club La Vilaine — Club with a good sound system, DJs and a smoke room.
- Fuse Club — The big club in the Marolles: multiple floors, bars and a dark room; home of La Démence.
- LA DEMENCE — The legendary monthly gay circuit party (since 1989) at Fuse.
- Le You — Central club that hosts gay nights and the Flash Sunday tea dance.
- Bazaar Brussels — Bar and party space just south of the centre.
The scene is small enough that most regulars have their bar and stick to it. As a visitor, the practical move is to walk the Marché au Charbon and see what's busy.
