About this place Axel Guldsmeden

Axel Guldsmeden is the flagship gay-friendly hotel in Copenhagen — part of the Danish Guldsmeden Hotels group, which is known for its organic, eco-conscious approach to boutique hospitality, and specifically the property within that group that has built the strongest following among LGBTQ+ travellers. The hotel sits on Helgolandsgade in the Vesterbro neighbourhood, a five-minute walk from Copenhagen Central Station and close to both the gay venues of Studiestræde and the broader Vesterbro nightlife. The property has a distinctive character: dark wood, organic textiles, candles, a hammam spa, and a restaurant that takes the Guldsmeden philosophy seriously. The hotel does not market itself exclusively as a gay hotel — it is gay-friendly in the European sense of genuinely welcoming rather than specifically targeted — but its LGBTQ+ following is substantial and its inclusion in gay travel guides is well-established. For Copenhagen Pride week, Axel Guldsmeden is one of the first hotels to book out; reserve at least four months in advance.

It’s very frustrating finding reviews that rate boutique hotels based on aesthetics only to be burned every time you experience their mediocrity. You can easily find a slightly higher priced hotel for a much better experience. I’m not a picky traveller but for some reason, this particular experience was frustrating due to the incongruence of ratings vs. experience. Overall, this hotel was just ok, if you’re travelling as a couple, the basic rooms are extremely small for the price (relative to other hotels in the area). They get warm in the summer and there’s no fans or aircon. We upgraded to the superior double which was also just ok. It’s bigger and more spacious with a ceiling fan but the bathroom is kind of meh. It’s a bathtub with open layout so you basically get water all over the floor without a holder to take a proper shower using the shower handle. As earlier mentioned, this is a place that is very instagrammable but is overall meh. The lobby, courtyard, and main areas look like a lush, and beautiful common space. But compared to similar price points, it’s not that great. If you just want a pretty backdrop for a coffee in the common areas, it looks nice enough, but if you actually want a quiet night's sleep and a functional room, look elsewhere. We did not use the spa so cannot comment on it.

Good hotel for 1-2 nights. Room is extremely small, the jaccuzzi on the roof wasn’t included as expected (costs 300 DKK extra) the gym machines need to be repaired - it’s almost to the point where its a hazard and you can injure yourself. At night it’s very loud. Also: the street its on can get very loud at night, and it’s very dodgy during the day. Otherwise it has a good location with close proximity to everything. One more thing: paying this much per night I expect a Smart TV to be available.

Unfortunately me and my wife didn’t have a good stay. The room was dirty - while I was putting down my bag I find bitten nails on the floor. We kindly asked the stuff in the reception to fix the problem and clean the room but they did not, bad service…

I liked the staff and location, restaurant was nice and place looked clean. However there were problems, biggest of which was that the toilet stopped working and I had to go to the reception to let them know. Reception quickly sent someone up to help, and she clearly knew that the solution was to shake the toilet quite hard, then the water started flowing again. This happened twice after that in the following days. So staff knew it was faulty and rented the room anyway. Problem number two was the bedframe, it was old and made constant creaking noises whenever someone even touched the bed. This was annoying for both me and my partner, bedframe looked old and sounded like it. I can not recommend a hotel that clearly knew the toilet was faulty but decides to give out the room anyway, and made it my problem to fix.

Great hotel and the staff are top quality and always willing to help. Location is right by the train station and metro and around a lot of things to do and an easy walk into the main part of town. Pillows aren’t good but that’s my only bad mark on the hotel.
