About this place Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Helsinki

The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is a perfectly good place to stay in Helsinki, especially if you like your hotels to feel like, well, hotels.

It’s in a big, serious-looking building, a two-minute walk from the Kampintori light rail, which makes getting around easy. You're right in the center of things, but also close enough to the neighborhoods where actual people live and hang out.

Rooms are what you'd expect: free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers. Nothing too wild. Some rooms look out over the city; club rooms get you a free breakfast and a Nespresso machine. Suites have living areas, and some even have private terraces if you want to pretend you're not in a hotel at all.

Downstairs, there’s a steakhouse with a cocktail lounge for when you want something a bit nicer, a coffee shop for a quick bite, and a terrace bar that opens when the weather's actually good. It's all very standard, very reliable. And being a Radisson Blu, it's the kind of place many LGBTQ+ travelers in Helsinki know and trust, particularly during Pride. It’s a solid, understated base, whether you're here for the parties or just to see the sights.

It has been 10 years since I last visited Radisson Blu Royal Hotel and their recently completed renovations really gives it a brighter and modern welcome. The super warm and friendly lady at the front desk on arrival was the beginning to my excellent stay at this hotel. I often opt to upgrade my original booking on arrival and there was certainly no regret in doing so, opting for the lovely Executive Suite (a shame there were major roadworks outside the hotel but this is beyond the hotel’s control). Breakfast was lovely, great buffet selection along with a cooked-to-order omelette. The bar and restaurant (NORD) were equally delightful with good drinks selection and lovely food. Also worth noting that the breakfast, bar and restaurant staff were fantastic. Housekeeping was faultless and made the overall stay really nice. Although I usually stay at the Plaza Hotel (mainly for convenience as it is next to the main station), the Royal Hotel is now, without doubt, my go to choice for Helsinki. The only minor markdowns are the on-site gym (still not ready), bar and restaurant not open on Sunday and towels that leave white fluffy bits on you. The room also needs some minor maintenance from previous guests that have not looked after it but the overall experience has been superb, in particular, the amazing staff that oversees the hotel.
