About this place Fabrika

Fabrika ? 'factory' in Georgian ? is exactly what the name suggests: a large Soviet-era manufacturing facility, formerly the state sewing factory, that was converted into a creative complex and opened to the public in 2017. The result is one of the most successful adaptive reuse projects in Tbilisi: a long, U-shaped concrete building surrounding a courtyard that is now occupied by a rotating population of bars, cafes, restaurants, boutique shops, a hostel, a barbershop, a record store, and a succession of pop-up cultural events. The courtyard is the engine of the space. On a warm evening it fills with a crowd that is, by Tbilisi standards, notably diverse and open: international tourists, Georgian professionals in their twenties and thirties, expats, artists, designers, and a substantial queer presence that has made Fabrika one of the most reliably comfortable outdoor social spaces in the city for LGBTQ+ visitors. Unlike the clubs, which operate at night and require a specific commitment, Fabrika is accessible from mid-morning through midnight and functions as a genuinely public space ? you can arrive with a coffee at noon or a beer at 11pm and find a different but equally welcoming crowd. The bars in the courtyard change over time; several have been specifically popular with queer visitors. The Vino Underground wine bar, one of the best natural wine bars in a city with many good natural wine bars, has operated in the complex and attracted a notable LGBTQ+ following. The food options range from Georgian to Mexican to Ethiopian ? the courtyard's eating culture reflects the international character of its clientele. Weekend evenings at Fabrika can feel like a concentrated version of everything Tbilisi's creative class is doing on a given night ? there is always something happening, whether a DJ set in the courtyard, a live music performance in one of the indoor spaces, a market, or a film screening. For LGBTQ+ visitors arriving in Tbilisi without established community contacts, spending a Friday evening at Fabrika is one of the most reliable ways to connect with the local scene. The complex is located in the Chugureti neighbourhood, on the main avenue that runs through central Tbilisi, and is easily reached on foot from most of the city's central accommodation.
