Bassiani is not just a club. In the context of Georgian LGBTQ+ life, it is something closer to a sanctuary ? a space where the social rules of the wider city are suspended, where queer people can be visible without fear, and where the music, the darkness, and the shared physicality of the dance floor create a temporary world that feels entirely different from the street outside. That it has also become one of the most internationally acclaimed techno venues in Europe is partly a consequence of that intensity. The venue occupies the former Olympic swimming pool in the basement of the Soviet-era Dinamo stadium, a setting that gives it a scale and acoustic character unlike almost any other club. The main floor is a vast, arched concrete space ? the pool's dimensions converted into a dance floor that can hold over a thousand people ? with a sound system that is among the best in Europe. The darkness is total; the visual language is minimal; the music does the work. DJs from Georgia, from the European circuit, and from the international techno community play sets that run through the night and into the following day, with the peak hour arriving somewhere around 4 or 5am. The door policy is famously selective on aesthetic grounds ? Bassiani's team looks for people who are there for the music and the community, not for spectacle ? but within the club, the inclusivity is genuine and comprehensive. Gay men, lesbians, straight Georgians, international visitors, trans people, non-binary people, all are present in roughly equal measure, and the club's explicit positioning as a queer-friendly space has made it a magnet for Tbilisi's LGBTQ+ community since its opening in 2014. In 2018, Bassiani and the adjacent Caf? Gallery became the scene of a pivotal moment in Georgian history when police raided both venues searching for drugs. The community response ? thousands of ravers gathering outside the parliament building in what became known as the 'rave revolution' ? was one of the most dramatic demonstrations of counter-cultural solidarity in post-Soviet history and substantially raised the club's international profile. The venue has operated without major interruption since. Practical information: Bassiani operates on Friday and Saturday nights from approximately 11pm, with the doors often open through Sunday evening for marathon sessions. Entry is by face control at the door ? dress code is dark, practical, and unfussy; avoid anything overtly tourist or casual. Bring cash for the entrance fee (typically 20?40 GEL depending on the night). The cloakroom is essential; the bar is basic. Photography is strictly prohibited ? phones are stickered at the door.

I tried a lot of techno clubs around Europe. We arrived early around 10 p.m. They asked a few questions about techno, and we entered with 4 guys. What an amazing night. Pure techno. Pure sound system. We left at 7, but the party must go on. Thank you. No phones allowed, only techno ♥️

The music was loud and clear, which is a matter of taste, but the bass system was poor and the music was constantly distorted. What bothered me was that it seemed like only smokers were present, and this was allowed, and the poor ventilation made breathing impossible.

I'm genuinely sad and disappointed from my experience at this club tonight on a queer event - Hydrash. It all started when there were two men standing behind me in the line and we got into a conversation and I noticed that both of them had very strong Russian accents. I asked them where they were from and they both laughed and hesitated and one of them said "good question...you don't wanna know". It was obvious that they were clearly Russian who were aware that this club doesn't allow the entry of Russian citizens. Since it was a queer event they both had invitations that were possibly faked cause if they had entered their actual information in the registration form they wouldn't have been verified. They were holding Georgian passports and were wearing glasses to cover their faces. I warned the bouncer that there was a high chance that the men behind me were Russian citizens and were holding passports that didn't belong to them. I asked the bouncer to check them thoroughly. It took him exactly 30 seconds to allow them to enter. And when these Russians entered I heard one of them say "we pull this everytime". As a visitor of this club and as a Georgian citizen who wants to be in a safe space without my country's invaders and occupants, I felt very unsafe and devastated by the bouncer's lack of responsibility and incompletion of a very valid request: to check the people I - their member and a visitor - thought were dangerous and were breaking the club's rules. When I entered the club, I heard a lot of Russian speaking around me. It felt very unsafe to be among this crowd and I felt very disappointed. Later on, two of my Georgian friends who wanted to come to the club were denied of access and when I stepped outside to see them, I also saw that two Dutch boys had also been rejected. They were saying that there were two Russian men in front of them in the queue who the bouncers let in. I can't fathom to process how a place as great as Bassiani, with an incredible space inside, world tier music, and morals that they preach about being anti-Russian, allowed such behavior tonight: rejecting Georgians and Europeans and allowing Russians in the club. Also to note, the bouncers were incredibly mean to me and my friends when we expressed disappointment about this situation. I believe that this place is really great but its bouncers are not doing their jobs the way they're supposed to and are creating an atmosphere inside that feels the opposite of what the club stands for.
