Black Forest Hostel

I've stayed at this hostel twice now, in both 2023 and 2025. It is a fantastic place to stay in a fantastic city. It is your classic backpacker type hostel, with a lot of character. Bed's are pretty cheap, and the space as lots of amenities. The metal cylinder showers are interesting, there's a communal kitchen, and a social area with couches. It is walking distance to the train station, but close to the tram as well. I highly recommend walking up the hill, and climbing the Schlossbergturm for sunset. The staff here are friendly and there 24/7. There's often a lot of people in the summer, and yet its pretty quiet, not a rowdy party hostel.

I loved the vibe of the hostel! It has a large common area, the beds are comfortable, and the staff is friendly! I would definitely return.

The pillow is so bad it is like no pillow at all and they dont do the bedsheets for the guests. It isnt clean and i think the other options can be better. Worst decision ever

Not wanting to host groups is totally okay. But don’t first tell me to write an email when I call to book a room and assure me that you have space and that groups are welcome, only to then take two days to respond (when I followed up, I was told emails are only checked once a week?) and, in the end, turn down our reservation because you do not want to host groups. Just state that on the website or say it upfront instead of wasting everybody’s time.

I stayed at Black Forest Hostel for 2 days while planning a day trip to Switzerland, and overall it was a really pleasant experience. The beds were comfortable, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming. I especially liked the common areas, they even have a piano, and during my stay one guy was playing guitar while a girl was singing; they did it so beautifully that it really made my evening. The kitchen is very well maintained and fully equipped, making it easy to cook your own meals. Another great plus is the free tea and coffee available for everyone. The only downside for me was the wooden flooring. Even when people walk slowly, you can hear footsteps quite clearly, especially at night when someone is sleeping, which can be a bit distracting. Apart from that, everything was great, and it’s a good option if you’re looking for a comfortable stay in Freiburg.
