Distillery

The Distillery is Leipzig's flagship underground electronic music venue — a club with a 30-year history on Kurt-Eisner-Strasse that has maintained its integrity as the city developed a larger commercial nightlife. The venue is queer-friendly in its social character and hosts dedicated queer club nights on a monthly rotation, but its primary identity is as a techno and electronic music club of genuine quality. The sound system is exceptional, the programming brings DJs of international stature to Leipzig, and the physical design of the club prioritises the dance-floor experience over Instagram aesthetics. Leipzig has developed a reputation as a cheaper, more politically serious alternative to Berlin's clubbing culture, and the Distillery is a major reason for that reputation. The queer club nights at Distillery operate within this serious electronic music context: expect harder sounds than at the bar-club venues, a crowd that is primarily there to dance rather than to socialise in the conventional bar sense, and an environment that takes the queer-feminist safer-space approach seriously.
