Yes — same-sex marriage is legal in Iceland. See the Legal Status panel on this page for the specifics. Iceland decriminalised same-sex relations in 1940, registered partnerships in 1996, and same-sex marriage with full adoption and IVF rights took effect in June 2010; the Church of Iceland marries same-sex couples. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation has been illegal since 1996 and gender identity since 2014, with employment covered explicitly from 2018. The 2019 Gender Autonomy Act allows legal gender change by self-determination, adds an X marker, puts gender-affirming care on an informed-consent basis and protects intersex minors from non-consensual surgery. Conversion therapy was banned in June 2023, and since 2026 men who have sex with men donate blood without restriction. Iceland has ranked first on the Equaldex Equality Index and second only to Malta on ILGA-Europe's map. Reykjavík Pride in August draws around a third of the country's population, and the president attends. Public support for same-sex marriage has been above 85 percent for twenty years. There is one proper gay bar in Reykjavík, Kiki, and nobody needs more; the whole city is comfortable.
