KEX Hostel and Hotel Reykjavik

I‘ve stayed at Kex multiple times, it‘s a very decent Hostel, the location is what makes it amazing. Yesterday evening I visited without staying and wanted to have a beer with two of my friends. After being ignored by the redhaired lady at the front desk, she then came to the bar, served another customer, left again to go back to the frontdesk just to ignore us for another five minutes. She clearly did see us and could see us from the frontdesk, but chose to ignore us. We had to go there, ask her to serve us, to what she acted kind of surprised. Her service was below mediocre, Guinness was not served properly, and all in all it ruined the experience for us. Very unfortunate, because that changed my views of this place for the worse. Please make sure your Staff know how to treat customers.

The room is well kept and clean. However, the room is not properly soundproofed as we are occassionally disturbed by dripping sound throughout the night. The staff is very helpful and kind. The communal kitchen requires improvement, more cleaning and proper utensils. For its cheap price, you won't have much to complain for a short stay.

Price is first matter? Why don't you choose this accommodation? Unless not you have to invest more.

The 42-bed dorm would be ten times better if it had curtains; there’s no space for large luggage. The room doors don’t close properly, so they’re basically always open to everyone. You have to pay for a towel, as well as a lock for your locker.

Our room suited our needs very well with a queen sized bed with a queen sofa sleeper as well. Everything was clean and comfortable. We had a mid-week stay and, even though they were completely booked, the hotel/hostel was quiet. Our room overlooked a courtyard with seating but it wasn't used the might we stayed due to rain. The breakfast bar could be described as "Continental" in the States with pastries, cereal, yogurt, deli meats, sliced veggies and fruit. It was about $21 per person which seems expensive but not in Iceland and it was very convenient not to have to go elsewhere to eat. Staff were helpful and competent. I'd stay here again 👍

This was my third stay at Kex Hostel in Reykjavík, and once again I truly enjoyed it. The staff are always lovely and helpful – always smiling and ready to help. The rooms and beds were clean and comfortable, and the kitchen was well equipped for guests. I would just add a little more coffee and a wider selection of teas – some herbal tea or fruit tea would be great. There was plenty of black tea this time though, which was nice! I really like the style of Kex Hostel – it has its own unique character and cozy atmosphere. I was happy to see that the elevator is now working, so for the first time I didn’t have to carry my suitcase up the stairs. You can take it from the area behind the restaurant – very convenient! The showers on each floor are either shared or private with a toilet. All guests should remember to bring at least a small towel and shampoo, and of course keep everything clean. This is just a small tip for those who stay here for just one night. Since many people come and go, it can happen that a hairdryer or kettle stops working – but right now everything was in perfect order. If something doesn't work, please let the staff know – they are always kind and ready to help. Overall, Kex remains one of my favorite places to stay in Reykjavík. Thank you and see you soon! 😊

Great hostel! Very helpful, very friendly, comfortable beds, and I appreciate they offer *free* luggage storage that they don't expect you to pick up by 4 P.M! Quiet, close to a bus line, and a fantastic ocean view! I will definitely be back again.

Definitely not the place for people who want to sleep. Even if you are staying in the „hotel” part, people yell just right beside your window.

Visited in May 2026 The location of this hostel is incredible. It's an easy walk to the surrounding attractions in Reykjavik, and very close to the sculpture and shore walk along the ocean. The staff are nice and helpful. I stayed in the compact double private room, it was spacious and very clean. Because it is a hostel, it can get loud in the night and evenings. Overall, I would recommend this hostel if you are visiting Reykjavik.
