About this place Cafe Ons Moeke

Cafe Ons Moeke on the Paterswoldseweg looks like an ordinary Dutch cafetaria: a snack counter with fries and frikandellen, plus a brown-cafe room for drinks. What makes it different is owner Jantina Darwinkel, who has spent many years running it as a refuge for LGBTQ+ young people, including some who left intolerant homes. She feeds them, helps with jobs and keeps the door open to everyone. It is a cafe, not a nightlife venue, and the crowd is a mix of locals, students and queer regulars. It sits just south of the city centre, an easy walk or bike ride from the Grote Markt.

I actually only ate chicken nuggets here, but they were delicious and very reasonably priced. Very nice staff and a great atmosphere. What is also worth 5 stars alone is the hygiene in the restrooms. 🫶

Yesterday, on the way to a concert in the city park, we stopped here for a quick meal… And it certainly was quick; our order was taken quickly and brought to our table quite soon after we placed it. The Groningen egg ball and the homemade bear claw tasted great! Affordable, top service, and a friendly owner! +1
