Regenboogzebrapad

The Regenboogzebrapad (rainbow crossing) is Groningen's most visible symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, painted across the Ubbo Emmiussingel on the walking-and-cycling route between the central station and the old town, a short stroll from the Groninger Museum. The crossing was first laid in 2016 after a campaign by DWARS, the youth wing of the GroenLinks party, timed to appear before National Coming Out Day on 11 October. Unlike a temporary Pride banner, the rainbow crossing is a permanent, year-round statement that everyone in the city should feel free to be themselves. It has become a small landmark in its own right: locals cross it on their daily commute and visitors stop to photograph it, especially in the run-up to Pride Groningen each June. When the road surface was resurfaced in 2024 the rainbow colours were promptly repainted on the fresh asphalt, a sign of how firmly the city has adopted it. It sits a couple of minutes' walk from the station, making it an easy first or last stop on any queer tour of Groningen \u2014 a photogenic marker of a compact, welcoming northern Dutch city.
