I had dinner at Lasai again, and just like last time, everything was perfect. We had the Aste Nagusia menu and loved it. The French toast with the sheep's milk ice cream was delicious. We'll definitely be back.
Arriving at Lasai, we were met by a maître d’ who appeared genuinely inconvenienced by our arrival. Without a word, he disappeared, only to be replaced by a gormless server who showed us to our table. We were offered bread so stale that we asked for it to be replaced. Unfortunately, the replacement was equally stale. The wine list is presented on an iPad. The server struggled her way through it. We asked for Cava and she insisted on trying to find it on the device. We opted for the Menu Lasai. From there, things went steadily downhill. Each dish seemed less coherent than the last. There was a fish and ginger beer course that was initially intriguing, right up until we tasted it. The combination of flavours was so bizarre that I genuinely struggle to understand how it made it onto the menu. The one thing that remained consistent throughout was the poor execution: stale bread, a burst egg yolk, a half-melted dessert and, finally, an old, crunchy macaron. The only saving grace was a third server who was charming and deserved to be presenting better dishes. I don’t understand how this place stays afloat. It feels completely out of its depth. Lasai means “calm” in Basque. Eating here would test the zen of a monk.
A culinary highlight. Every dish an experience. The highlight is the beef cheeks, cooked for 72 hours at a low temperature, resulting in unparalleled tenderness. Only the caramelized egg yolk cream of the dessert "Tocino de cielo de café" was a bit too sweet for my taste. Otherwise, a huge compliment to the team and many thanks for the wonderful culinary experience.
Was excited to come to the restaurant for a special occasion and was disappointed by the experience - saved by the one excellent front of house staff who seemed to be the only one was fully trained and like he wanted to be there - otherwise would have rated this worse. The food was average - not sure if the quality was impacted by the busy Aste Nagusia period.
Spectacular!!! We tried the Aste Nagusia menu, and several dishes were truly delicious!! Unforgettable were the Begihandi noodles, the cod with pork jowl, and the French toast. Sublime, I'd definitely order it again!
