Sweden decriminalised same-sex relations in 1944, was the first country to allow legal gender change in 1972, introduced registered partnerships in 1995, joint adoption in 2003 and same-sex marriage on 1 May 2009. The constitution has banned discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation since 2002, gender identity and expression have been protected since 2009, and both are covered by hate crime law. A new gender recognition law passed in 2024 and in force since 1 July 2025 lowers the age to 16 and removes the psychiatric evaluation. Conversion therapy on minors is criminalised. Public support for same-sex marriage is above 90 percent. Sweden has moved cautiously on youth gender medicine since 2022, limiting puberty blockers to exceptional cases, and an organised anti-trans movement has grown. Stockholm Pride in early August is the largest in the Nordics and the Södermalm bars are its centre; Gothenburg and Malmö have smaller scenes. For visitors the whole country is easy.
