During my visit, I encountered several unacceptable issues that fell significantly short of standard expectations: Ignored Pre-Arrival Requests: A day prior to my arrival, I explicitly requested a baby cot, extra pillows, and towels for my infant son. Upon checking in and arriving at our room, absolutely none of these essential items had been provided or set up. Aggressive Upselling for Basic Amenities: I requested two bathrobes and slippers for our room. Rather than accommodating this straightforward request, the reception team repeatedly insisted that these items were only available if I paid £100 per night to upgrade to a suite. Denying a first-time guest such basic amenities to force an upsell is incredibly disappointing. It left me questioning whether the hotel is striving to provide a premium standard of service or settling for a 3-star experience. Poor Housekeeping Standards: I discovered a significant accumulation of dust next to the bed. This lack of basic cleanliness and attention to detail is highly unprofessional, particularly when accommodating guests traveling with an infant. Lack of Empathy and Poor Attitude: On the morning of our departure, my baby vomited after breakfast. I had been advised prior to my arrival that I could inquire about a complimentary late check-out on the morning of departure. I called reception to explain the situation and ask for a slightly later check-out to clean him up. When asked how much time I needed, I naturally replied "as long as possible" given the stressful situation. The receptionist immediately stated he would send me a payment link. Even when I clarified that I only needed a brief 10 to 20-minute extension to manage the immediate mess with my child, the receptionist coldly reiterated that a payment link would be sent. This complete lack of empathy, basic courtesy, and flexibility was shocking and displayed a distinctly poor attitude.

Comfortable room but unacceptable cleanliness & safety response Stayed at Clayton Hotel Birmingham City Centre. Check‑in was smooth and the room was ready and very spacious, but the positives end there. There’s no on‑site parking — the closest public car park is Selfridges (B4), about a 10–15 minute brisk walk. The bathroom was poorly equipped and maintained: all tap and shower faces were missing, there was no shower cap, and only hand wash was provided (no body wash) — I had to use my own products. At around 2:00 AM a fire alarm was activated; staff did not take responsibility or provide clear instructions, and there was no visible management presence. Families with young children were woken and dragged from their rooms, which was distressing. Overall I wouldn’t recommend until housekeeping and safety/incident handling are improved. Good room size and location, but basic amenities and emergency response were unacceptable for the price.
